I truly and unabashedly adore this song.

In an attempt to be serious, the video film dooberywhatsit reveals the the 3 chains hold 3 gold parts that make up Prince's symbol name. He has said that his inner spirit - his soul - told him to change his name to this. So the whole thing is sort of about keeping true to his inner soul which no one could take away from him, i.e. his name, represented by the gold symbol, is a representation of his soul, and it is this that can never be 'melted down'.

I find it all faintly Egyptian - in the way heiroglyphics represented a king and his name, and they believed if you scrubbed out the name, you took his power away.
