WHY WAS "THE GOLD EXPERIENCE" NOT RATED BY MUSIC CRITICS?

i think most orgers would agree that "the gold experience" album was prince's best of the ninties so why was it not that highly rated by music critics?
...
...i think the album has some of his best material he ever released but i would have left out "pussy control", "we march" and "now" and i would have included "days of wild" and maybe "interactive" which was recorded around that time.
...
...i feel it might have been those 3 songs that pulled the album back from being a true prince classic.
...
...
so how does this tracklist look:
..
..endorphin machine
..shhh
..interactive
..most beautiful girl in the world
..dolphin
..days of wild
..319
..shy
..billy jack bitch
..i hate u
..gold biggrin

to be honest i think it is fairly rated by the critics, and known as one of his best of the 90s. check out the reviews on amazon etc.

personally i don't think its all that. its a good enough starting point but its just abit bland at times. i certainly wouldn't get rid of pussy control!!!!! that songs fucking ace!

Just the timing, lack of promotion, the name-change craziness, Prince was not cool then, all these things add up.

If Musicology had been released when the Gold experience was, it would have had the same kinda reviews and vice-versa.

Reviews and media attention rarely have much to do with the record, but it's timing, promotion and over-all "trendiness".

Because it came out on a time that was not very suitable for Prince (and it was a relatively low-profile release anyway -by his then standards). The britpop invasion had just started, new froms of electronic music were spawning - people wanted to get rid of the old stars. And those who did not care about fads were still listening to Metallica and Alice In Chains.

Also I don't think too many older casual fans were that attracted to his darker sexual image he was portraying at the time. Critics could be seen as such - I still remember a comment from the Q magazine "Stop waving your dick, man!"(the album got three stars).

But yes, it's rather dubious why the album wasn't called "a new Purple Rain" or something in the vein. NME (or was it Melody Maker?) even had a huge preview article on the record earlier that year, but when the album finally came out all the interest was gone. I actually found it rather strange at the time too.

I saw really positive reviews on it in alot of mainstream magazines.

TGE was one of my favorite prince albums for the longest time.
It's alot to take in one album though--alot of songs, and they're all sooooo singalong. But fun.

Interestingly, I find TGE to be one of Prince's albums with multiple songs I haven't warmed up to. Your proposed changes would be an improvement (although PC might be retained as a keepsake of an "era", 'tho not a great song).

I could live without Endorphinmachine and especially, Gold (which I think is one of the most derivative and unoriginal things he's written).

Even though I always thought the album was quite packed, I always enjoyed listening to it. TGE and prince are probably my favorite of P's 90s albums...
