Prince's Best Song

I know this has come up, but it doesn't seem to come up as often as "Prince's worst song" or "Prince's dirtiest song" or "Prince's most blah blah song". So what are people's nominations? I think my personal favorite is She's Always in my hair, whether or not that's his absolute best is highly debatable

A very difficult topic. That's probably why it hasn't been asked very much, looking at his mass body of work. If I could choose any song, I would probably go with "Condition of the Heart" from Around the World In A Day. Something about it gets me everytime I hear it.

I believe his best song would be something like "Purple Rain" or "Anna Stesia" because of how they're written and performed, but a personal favorite of mine is "The Grand Progression" -- it's so beautiful and personal. Besides that one, probably "Automatic" or "Something in the Water."

I would definitely put Purple Rain, Anna Stesia and Something in the water in the top ten

While I swing between such gems as "Empty Room", "She's Always In My Hair" and "I wish U Heaven", I gotta go with:

"Mountains" bow

Picking one is EXTREMELY tough but if I could pick nominees it would be:

Purple Rain
Anna Stesia
Adore
Sometimes It Snows In April
Little Red Corvette
When Doves Cry
Power Fantastic
Sign O The Times

Out of these it's Purple Rain but I have plenty more to choose from.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I HAVE to go with "Purple Rain" because, like I said in a previous post, everytime he plays it, it's always different.Sometimes he starts with the lyrics, sometimes a short solo in the beginning, changes the lyrics, etc

As for the creativity of the lyrics and imaging-- I'd have to say New World-- Its genius in a can

According to the popheads-- When Doves Cry

Mae your own decision.

What? Nobody mentions The Beautiful Ones? I think that song alone puts Prince in his own category. My choices: The Beautiful Ones, Something In The Water DNC, Sign O' The Times and the Question of U.

1. Purple Rain- masterpiece. Even though I've heard it hundreds of times, it still just gives me the chills, especially the ending

2. The Beautiful Ones- the lyrics just overwhelm you and the melody is so powerful and beautiful (no pun intended) at the same time. Probably my second favorite ending of any prince song with the emotional screams, next to his angellic falsetto in the ending of Purple Rain.

3. When Doves Cry- You can't mention Prince's greatest songs and leave this one out. Cuz this is the song everyone knows. When you ask a normal person what is your favorite song of Prince, they will say WDC, it's just a given. To have a hit without the use of bass is an extraordinary accomplishment in itself.

1999? That was the song that got me hooked on Prince. Unfortunately it's almost been played to death...but how cool was it to write THE song for the new millenium 18 years early?

Impossible to say really what his best song is coz there's sooooo many, particularly from the 80s, ranging from classic singles to b-sides, unreleased songs, songs that don't even sound like him (Bob George) etc.

For me The Holy River is undisputedly his best song post Batman.
