Jimi and Prince......

i have been a MAJOR jimi hendrix fan for most of my life....and when i first saw purple rain and heard the song purple rain combined with the hair.and the ruffled shirt and princes "special" white guitar...it instantly made me think he was 100% ripping jimi off....mind u...i love prince like he's family smile
but i dont care how many times he claimed in the 80's to not be influenced by hendrix...IT AINT TRUE !!!! jimi played a WHITE stratocaster... had the same hairstyle...wore ruffled shirts and tight pants...had the same moustache...and
jimi had a major hit with his song PURPLE HAZE....i cant be the only one that can see that .....PURPLE RAIN is the same damn thing ????
i hope not cause its pretty obvious to me....oh well...

I totally agree. I loved Jimi already before Prince released his first album, when Iheard Prince I couldn't help comparing to Jimi. Prince always said he had been more influenced by Santana, I never heard that in his music as obvious as influences of Jimi's music and looks. I like Santana's old stuff, but IMHO it doesn't come close to Jimi's work. Jimi was the man and I've always believed Prince to be influenced most by him.

No need to BLASPHEME in this damn post!

I'm a big fan of prince, but to say he doesnt display some degree of jimi influence is absurd! as do many artists of today display the influence of prince

i wouldnt say prince ripped off jimi, that's way to simplistic

prince shows the influence of many great legends (jimi, little richard, santana, sly, jb, etc)

but let's not TRY to discredit jimi to defend prince

There are feats of Jimi's that are still giving guitarists nightmares

Machine Gun anyone?

i agree! in my opinion, i think hendrix was a better guitarist than Prince is now (altho hendrix was a sloppy musician and altho prince is my favourite guitarist). even stevie ray vaughn was a better guitarist than Prince is now. prince has his own personal style which is excellent but it could never in my opinion match jimi hendirx.

Being a teenager of the 1980s and a funk lover, I had never heard of Jimi Hendrix until after "Purple Rain" when the media kept comparing Prince to him. In 1984, I bought a Jimi Hendrix album called "High, Live, and Dirty" which is on red vinyl. At the time, I didn't like it. I threw it on the shelf and never listened to it until years later.

In the mid 1990s, after being totally bored and disgusted with all the current artists, I started getting into rock and other forms of music. I bought a Jimi Hendrix CD called "The Ultimate Experience" (a greatest hits CD). By this time, my tastes had broadened so I enjoyed many of the tracks. I also pulled my old "High, Live, and Dirty" album and enjoyed it also.

Now I'm getting ready to start buying the complete albums.

Whoaa!!!!Don't "fuck" Hendrix!!Prince is my favorite artist, but Hendrix is right there, too.Hendrix was too great to be "fucked".You "fuck" people like Usher or Justin Timberlake or Ashlee Simpson. You know I shouldn't say that.Somebody like those people.Only "fuck" Usher!!

Prince's musical styles and appearance has been influenced by more that Jimi. He is also influenced by James Brown, his father, Sly Stone, and Little Richard.Oh,and pprobably some unnamed pimps out in the midwest.

I co-sign this post. Jimi is up there with the greatest (like Prince himself), and was certainly an influence to Prince. If you can't hear that or see that, Ithink you really have a problem, LOL! BTW, Jimi is the better guitarist IMHO, he is an originator. I think 90% of musicians will agree with me, even Prince himself (if only in his heart, LOL!).
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I dont think Prince was trying to rip Hendrix off. Prince was and is a Hendrix fan. Prince never wanted to talk about his influnces because Prince wanted the freedom to do his thing.IF THERE WERE NEVER A HENDRIX PRINCE WOULDNT BE PRINCE! Even the sunglasses and the hat he had on in the Doves Cry video was Hendrix. Humping the guitar like Hendrix on the Dirty Mind/Controversy Tours on the song Head. Humping the guitar like Hendrix on the song Baby Im A Star. Lets Go Crazy is like Hendrix song Foxy Lady (On the Purple Haze Tour, sarry, the Purple Rain Tour Prince even says "Im comin' to get ya!" like Hendrix) The Purple Rain/Purple Haze thing lots more Hendrix stuff Prince has done over the years. Purple House for one.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

Prince never wanted to talk about his influences. Prince is different then Hendrix: the falsetto voice is like Curtis Mayfield and Prince's music is psychedelic Rock & Soul, Hendrix was psychedelic Rock & Blues, Prince is Glam Rock, Androgyny (New Wave) from the 70s & 80s, Hendrix was a Hippy from the 60s.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

nod

Listen to Jimi speaking on "If 6 was 9". Every time I hear it I think of Prince's voice, and way of speaking. It's VERY similar.

Hendrix wasn't just a "hippy from the 60s". He was light years ahead of his time, and I don't think he can be categorized so easily.

Fucking purple koolaid drinkers. when Prince revolutionises an instrument the way Hendrix did get back to me.

as you appear to be a set of simpletons, i'd urge you to do something simplistic and go download Voodoo Chile (It's so the obvious choice)

Get back to me with anything remotely as good by Prince if you can. Or at least suggest something so i can laugh at you retards.

I was never a big fan of jimi until I heard the live music, completely different. I don't think the studio suited him.
As for the prince Santana influence, I never really heard it until much later, stuff like the Rainbow Children and Emancipation.

I think Page is an unapreciated influence in the way he uses his guitar to express pasion and emotion

I don't think there anything wrong with Prince being partial to Carlos over Jimi. He might just like the way Santana's plays better. Nothing wrong with that. That doesn't mean he disrepects Jimi. I don't think he wanted to be compared to him just because they both happen to be black and play guitar. (Which is just what a lot of media types were doing at the time.) Especially when he was just getting started in the business. He wanted to make a name for himself and put his own little stamp on the muscial landscape. Just imagine if he came out claiming to want to pick up where Jimi left off, he'd have come off looking like a real jackass like Terrance Trent D'Arby did when he compared himself to the Beatles and Prince when he first got into the business. And to be honest Prince sounds better covering Santana songs than he does Jimi. He and Santana have similar styles.

Agree with you 100% that his style is closer to Santana than Hendrix.
Much more scalic and he doesn't have that slinky voodoo-blues vibe that Jimi does.
The media does have a silly habit of comparing any black-guitarist to Hendrix.
Lazy reporting if you ask me.

My original post was based on the silly comment that was made.
