maybe this last year will inspire him. Coming to grips with immortality and realizing that so many ( besides us) acknowledge his great gift. He may have been doing his own thing, but even that get's old, every now and then we all like attention. I loved musicology for it's sharpe streamlined approach, and there were moments. "marrying kind /if i was the man in your life" is classic prince to the degree that he should rock a fro and legwarmers in the video LOL. But as i was saying, i think all of the love and acknowledgement will light a spark in him, hell he's probably puttin down some monster funk right now.Listening to ONA gives me the impression that he does have passion, but it's his and he'll express it to any of us who can ride. Prince stated on Tavis Smiley that he gives us props for allowing him to evolve, and taking the ride with him. He even stated that we were more sophisticated in our taste and astute about music. that we come here and bitch about some cheesy drum machines and synth's is hilarious. I'm a boxing writer and one rule of thumb is all great fighters past their prime have one great fight left in them. 2004 was a tune up, prince is priming for that last big ass kickin. Can You Hang?

I can hang for as long as it takes-- but from your writing, it seems that everything put out recently besides Musicology is crap.

P past his prime?

What do the orgers think of that?

Prince ages well like fine wine. It's only just begun. He will always make music whether it is similiar to the old jams or something completely new and although I miss the old Prince primarily because I missed out on so much, I embrace the new one. I'll ride ou tas long as possible as long as I h=get to see him in concert.

yes (god forbid) prince has a prime and he is past it. now we may argue and debate about what that "prime" was but that only proves his incredible longevity and unique place in music. One only need reference "hot thang" from the Sign o' the Times DVD and think real hard about what they saw on the musicology tour. I'm OK with it, because he's still the most versitile and complete live performer ever. The boxing anology was used to make the point that theres still greatness left. ali's "prime" was 1964-1968 in those years he seemed almost untouchable in the ring, impossible to hit and he was all of 24 years old. But, his masterpiece, the feat (beating George Foreman) that made him a ring immortal came in 1974 at age 32 (that's like 50 in boxing years) when no one believed he had anything left. In the dictionary prime is defined as "best and most vigorous period" i call it the time when yo shit dont stink. In music, Prince went through a period when everything he did was unlike anything we'd ever heard before and he knew it. Right now he is more in tune with his own humanity, the need for family and spiritual grounding which is very appropriate for his age. But, i sense that he's been inspired to some degree from all the love and that "vigor" of real youth ( not well preserved age !) is in his spirit. I predict the blue note project will be shelved (or put on NPGMC) and in 05' he will release some funky ass mindboggling shit. As boxing analogy's go Musicology was a tune up ( a test to see if he could still kick ass) and in 2005 he will step up to prove he is the greatest of all time.

remember the chris rock interview where chris showed prince a picture of 1999 era prince and asked who wins?. Prince laughed and basically said "that guy kicks my butt everyday of the week".Prince is OK with it, why cant we be?.He's OK with it because he knows the depth of what he has is so much more in proportion to say some kid like D' Angelo who puts out a record every 5 years. I think he's always been revered and even feared by his immediate peers but to get the love and admiration from the youngsters coming up is enough to light a fire under the man.

I'm sayin' nod after reading all of these posts about how Prince coulda...woulda....shoulda been this and that, i realized that there isn't anything wrong with Prince nor is there anything wrong with his string of recent releases. After Rave, I realized that Prince will probably never be able to capture that 80s sound again. And of course, I sat on my pity potty also and bitched and moaned about what I expected. But after The Rainbow Children, he shut me up pretty quickly and his whole catalog came into perspective once again.

the problem isn't Prince. It's people with this bullshit mindset about how YOU want Prince to sound like or what YOU think Prince should do to get big numbers for the next album.

Y'all giving all of this fake ass praise to Prince as a musician, performer etc and then turn around and shit on albums that are clearly a step up and beyond the montonous time warp ya'll minds are livin in.

That's not what I meant though. I do like Musicology, NEWS, Rainbow Children and others -I just feel they're missing something.
[Edited 11/23/04 16:59pm]

No, it's you my friend who is missing something. There was plenty of fire and purpose on The Rainbow Children. I think that was pretty recent. You just didn't like what you heard.

I think the only way I'd lose respect for Prince as an artist is if he tried to go back to his 80's sound and make Purple Rain II. His Purple Rain II was TRC I would argue. Only this time it wasn't so fan-friendly. Instead of surrounding himself with a cast of characters he brought in some great musicians because there was no public to win over-- nobody to prove anything to but himself. If nothing else he reminded people not to sleep on him because he could still surprise us.

To those calling Musicology great, think about your choice of words. It's a good album, but great?? C'mon. I know it's all a matter of opinion, but take a step back and ask yourself it this is your proverbial stranded on a desert island album. If the answer is yes than I guess the answer is yes (and you need your head and ears examined). razz
