No soul, no heart and not very much talent...

two words-U2
in the 80's we had fun.we had heart and soul.now we have bullshit music from bullshit producers...
go listen to "The Unforgettable Fire" and tell me the 80's had no heart and soul.

You guys have to understand that Prince is 45 years old now; so it would be a little ridiculous if he still wrote songs like the ones he did when he was 25 years old. It's called maturing. EVER HEAR OF IT? Just accept the new Prince and move on!!!

I will probally take some heat from certain folks who weren't even buying Prince
albums back in the mid-80's(these "folks" shall go nameless,i checked their profiles and lo and behold, they were very, very young children in the mid-80's).
Those of us who were buying Prince albums and studying them back then seem to have an affinity to his music from that time(1978-1988).Since then we have been subjected to a completely different artist, this new dude loves to shove HIS PERSONAL religeous beliefs down our throats, the Prince we were mystified by
in the 80's really never did that,he only "preached" about equality and the
benifits of diversity. The new dude loves to keep shoving "smooth jazz" down our throats. The 80's Prince said that "it's time 4 jazz 2 die"...It is all subjective and a matter of personal taste. You can't say that we are "frontin"-
WE WERE THERE,WHERE WERE YOU?it is easier for the younger crowd to accept some of prince's knock-off music because that is the music that they grew up on.that generation got "COME",my generation got "1999".see the difference?

Actually, I was there. Buying the vinyl albums for $6.98 a pop on sale and 12" singles for $3.99... all purpled down and dressed up in costume jewelry. Yes those indeed were the days. What's suprising is that being an "old-schooler" such as yourself that you don't understand that Prince has evolved beyond the "rude boy" image, trenchcoats and ruffles, Linn's for days and the "don't give a fuck attitude". You see, I grew up on that stuff too. So be careful when you use the words "I grew up on such and such" What that leaves me wanting to know is did you "grow beyond such and such Yes, those are all the things that made Prince an icon. But once again, Prince fans are holding him to a standard that no other artist is held to. I'm not saying what he does now is better or worse, but creatively, he's simply not in that place anymore. I can respect that.

BTW, as for this "shoving his personal religion down your throats"... that cliche is bullshit because here's a mini-timeline:

  • The Lord's Prayer on Controversy LP...
  • Hello how are you I'm fine, cause I know that the Lord is coming soon...
  • the long drawn out conversation with God on the Purple Rain tour
  • everybody's looking for the Ladder, everybody wants salvation of the soul
  • I know there was confusion, lightning all around me that's when I called His name don't you know He found me

and nobody had a problem with all that personal religion then... rolleyes What because it's an organized religion now there's gotta be some stimga? I don't agree with all the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses either but I wouldn't dare assume that those beliefs have some type of bearing on the music

Okay... back to my rant.

One of the intriguing things about Prince is that you are subjected to a completely different artist with every few releases. The Prince who created Sexy Dancer is a completely different sound than the one who made When Doves Cry. The one who made When Doves Cry is a completely different Prince than the one who masterminded the Madhouse projects. As a result of these albums, I would have never gone back to discover Joni Mitchell, Parliament-Funkadelic and James Brown.

With the release of The Rainbow Children, that was the first time in a long time that I heard Prince simply being Prince and not trying to keep up with what was going on in the clubs and on the radio. So would I say that Musicology is better than Parade? No, but it's a whole lot better than folks here give it credit for. As long as New Power Soul and 1999 The New Master exist, all words should be chosen carefully when it comes to critiquing anything post-2000.

For clarification, when I say "fronter" I say that for those who pretend they aren't as captivated by Prince now as when he was the pretty little pompous asswipe that we've all come to know and love. If it's that certain "thing from the 80s" you were looking for when it came to Prince's music you would have fallen off and never returned after Lovesexy. What's funny is that many a "fronter" will be checking Wal-Mart tomorrow just to make sure they didn't miss out on anything.

there really is no difference--my generation got everything yours did as well. if it weren't for the back catalogue of stuff, all we would know about is the '90s material and come to accept it as just that and we'd pay no mind to anything else p did beforehand.

as for one's age in whatever era and things being irrelevant due to youth, i was there. you don't have to buy albums and do the do (princely trend-wise) in order to truly "be there"--if you were around at the time and can remember things (as i can), you were there. you shouldn't hold this elitist way of thinking, a great majority of the other old-skool folks here sure don't. saddens me when older folks act like this, cuz it makes me feel older.

The eighties was an INCREDIBLE time for music. Everything sounded different. Prince didn't sound like Michael J. didn't sound like Adam Ant didn't sound like Duran Duran didn't sound like Def Leppard. Different types of music were played together a lot. I wish it was still like that. I'm sorry to hear about people that were too young to experience the 80's but then again there are people that feel sorry for me because I wasn't around in the 50's or 60's.

I'm sayin' nod after reading all of these posts about how Prince coulda...woulda....shoulda been this and that, i realized that there isn't anything wrong with Prince nor is there anything wrong with his string of recent releases. After Rave, I realized that Prince will probably never be able to capture that 80s sound again. And of course, I sat on my pity potty also and bitched and moaned about what I expected. But after The Rainbow Children, he shut me up pretty quickly and his whole catalog came into perspective once again.

the problem isn't Prince. It's people with this bullshit mindset about how YOU want Prince to sound like or what YOU think Prince should do to get big numbers for the next album.

Y'all giving all of this fake ass praise to Prince as a musician, performer etc and then turn around and shit on albums that are clearly a step up and beyond the montonous time warp ya'll minds are livin in.

it AINT 1984 people!

Purple Rain days are a wrap!

I'm not saying that you don't have he right to objectively critique the music. But, I'm so sick and tired of this fake ass support for Prince and then, turn around and crap all over albums that have some really great music on them. These albums might not be certified classics but they are still part of his ongoing evolution. Please let the man evolve. At the end of the day, no matter what he releases you'll still be trying to get your hands on it. Don't front.

All rise...let the choir say, amen.

And for all those folks who missed it ... sorry. But you need to buy a video tape or dvd and get over it. And for the love of god stop watching "vh-1 I love the 80's" and tripping. They're pulling out the memorable stuff and leaving out the doo-doo.

I am seriously hoping that he pulls the funk out again. I mean, not to sound selfish, but did he seriously think that WE would change with him? I love the man like family, but i'm sorry. I understand that the 80's are over and what not, but still. A LOT of stuff he did in the 80's didn't even sound like it was from the 80's. I always saw him as a musical pioneer, and whatever everyone else was doing at the time, he was gonna go his OWN way, since that's what he's been doing. Then i hear Musicology, and it sounds like everything else on the radio. That's what upset me about the album. We know he's a musician and all, but i seriously don't understand...Where's the experimental Prince? I mean, listen to Lovesexy. It doesn't have any abundant sex or drug themes on it. I wonder if he was going through a spiritual revelation on that album, because it's seriously the LAST we heard of him being so spiritually profound on an album, and it was cool without being preachy.

Save me jesus i've been a fool,
how could i forget you are the rule,
you are my God, I am your child,
and from NOW ON for you i shall be wild,
i shall be quick, i shall be strong,
i'll tell your story no matter how long...

Eye Know is basically a church song...

eye wish you HEAVEN

This album really meant a lot to me because at the time i was trying to deal with my sexuality and my spirituality at the same time, then to hear Lovesexy blew my mind away..

Have you ever been so lonely that you feel like you could take anyone boy OR girl...

he says "Take" instead of "choose" that spoke volumes to me. If we don't get another SOTT, 1999, or Purple Rain, i was AT LEAST expecting another Lovesexy. Lovesexy dealt with him coming to terms with God, it would be nice to see a follow up about God being in his life, and it's something only he can do. Making sexuality spiritual. He can do another spiritual album, and it doesn't have to be preachy "Jehovah this, Jehovah that..." Alphabet St. says "put the right letters together and make a better day", right along WITH sexual references in the song. To me, the Lovesexy lyrics are ambiguous. He could be talking about sex, or God, or both:

This feeling's so good in every single way,
I want it morning night and noon and night of everyday,
and if by chance i can not have it i can't say,
with it i know HEAVEN'S just a kiss away.

I'm sorry, i seriously forgot where i was going with this. But can we AT LEAST get another Lovesexy if he's gonna be so spiritual now. that's all i want. and yes, it is all about me.

Very well put my sister,

I too would like some of his funkyness to appear. Just because you say funky in a song does it make it so. Just because you mention James Brown in a song does it make it funky.

Lovesexy was a very interesting album. When 2 Are In Love doesn't mention gender. I loved that about that song. Later on in the song does get specific in gender but as long as the title included everyone, that was all right by me.
