Bohemian Raphsody is at 163 and Queen only have two songs in this list.
I would say it's not compiled very careful.

Yeah really, I'd like to see a "THIS YEAR / LAST YEAR" column, to see how they keep rating the same old shit, list after list.

Buttox

You should all inform yourselves before shooting your mouths off.The list was compiled by asking music people (Joni Mitchell was one of them) to list their top 50 songs and then converted into rankins using a formula. If you have a problem with the songs they picked then pick on those who were queried or if you know that Rolling Stone's choice of respondents is crap or the formula was crap then you could pick on that too ...

Predictable cynicism.

I do agree though that they should have a subtitle under their 'Greatest' lists that explains in what terms Greatest is being defined. But then we'd really be getting technical....

As for MJ and Maddona , comon they were just passing fads, hated them then, dont think about them much now. They are the popular 50's teenybopper doowop artist of our time, lol whatever that means, lol

While the merits of Madonna's songs can be debated (and personally, I think her later work is quite impressive, especially lyrically), there is no disputing that she has been one of the most influential artists of our time. Passing fad? Don't think so.

Oh good God, what are you complaining about? Of the 500 Greatest songs, he has more than 1 PERCENT! How many artists on this list are glad to have only one song on the list? How many artists are off the list altogether? Keep this in perspective - there are millions of songs they could choose from, and six (or seven) were chosen by a majority of his peers! Yeah!

Amazing how Rolling Stone caters to the 35+ crowd. NOT ONE SONG OF THE 90s IN THE TOP 50, if my first look is correct. Instead all the obvious choices.

Must be boring for the editors working at the mag... "I'd pick an Oasis song" - "Are you crazy, our readers don't even know who Oasis is" "Alright then, let's take another Bob Dylain..."

Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit and U2-One in the top 50 from the '90s.

I know you can't be serious when you pick Oasis, but can anybody truly pick a song in the top 50 and argue that it doesn't deserve to be there? It's not like they chose bad Dylan or Beatles tunes for the top spots. C'mon, if you really think the top 50 is wrong, I want to know what shouldn't be there, and what should have been there instead.

Um...When Doves Cry is a better song than Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain and Sign 'O' the Times? confuse

I would rank 'em like this:

1. Sign 'O' the Times
2. Purple Rain
3. Little Red Corvette
4. Kiss
5. 1999
6. When Doves Cry

While I understand the importance of WDC in terms of innovation, I personally think it's a highly overrated song.

When Doves Cry overated? I dont think so. It is an all time classic. And the reason I got into Prince in the first place.

The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker, Adore, Starfish And Coffee, Strange Relationship, If I Was Your Girlfriend, all better songs then many on the list, especially the Nirvana one.

These songs are all up there with the best in the top twenty.

To be honest out of all the lists theat have been published in the same vein over the years this is def. one of the best although there are a few starnge choices. This list is singles right? Or songs that have been used in a popular way as opposed to purely album tracks right?
A few obvious ommissions:
Unfinished Sympathy
Blue Monday (much better than bacon lettuce tomatoe)
Any Talking Heads
Any Kate Bush
Any Red Hot Chili Peppers
Any DJ Shadow

They're also so wrong in most of their stories regarding the songs for example Prince did not have any guitar solo that they talk about in Little Red Corvette or nmaybe im just wrong but I was sure that was Dez

I am almost positive that it WAS Prince who performed that solo. He did MOST of the music on 1999.
Dez did it in the VIDEO!!

As much as I think these lists are stupid. . . I still get this guilty pleasure from them.

We all love Prince. Let's not bash RS though, anyone here ever try to actually make a media related 'best of' list? Whew, that will wreck ya brain!

My top 5 Prince changes all the time but usually includes:

She's Always in My Hair

Power Fantastic

Wonderful Ass

Actually, Dez performed the solo on the recorded version of "Little Red Corvette" as well. It was one of his few studio credits during his tenure with Prince.
