What was the 1999 album called before the track 1999 was recorded? According to The Vault, the 1999 album was all ready to go, but WB told Prince he needed to record a strong lead-off single, so he recorded 1999 and placed it on the album (see also When Doves Cry, Kiss, Thieves In The Temple, Gett Off, Letitgo etc. - all lead-off singles added last-minute to the album). I never knew this before.
So what was the album called before the track 1999 was recorded and placed on the album? And does Prince still make last-minute additions to albums based on other people's opinions? I think not, but based on the tracks that used to come out of those opinions, maybe it's not a bad practice...

Hmm, don't remember hearing this. I would've thought "Little Red Corvette" would've been a great lead-off single. Actually it did a whole lot better on the pop charts than "1999" which was re-released after "Little Red Corvette." I don't even remember hearing "1999" on the radio until after "Little Red Corvette" became a hit.
Anyway, I wonder if the title of the album would've been something like Prince and the Revolution... or just The Revolution?

I don't know for a fact if he still makes last mintue additions to his albums. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he does. Although if you think back to the Purple Rain album that movie wasn't even purple rain when they first started making it. I don't even think they had the song purple rain made. This is just bits and peices of what I remembered from the cottemtary or however you spell it on the dvd.

"Purple Rain" was performed live on August 3, 1983, at First Avenue -- so it did exist; though the director said it wasn't one of the songs he was given to consider for the movie. At the same show Prince also performed "Let's Go Crazy," "Computer Blue," "I Would Die 4 U," and "Baby, I'm a Star." "When Doves Cry," "Take Me With U," and perhaps "The Beautiful Ones" were written after filming had begun. Apparently "When Doves Cry" was the last addition -- pretty marvelous for that! I had always just assumed that the song "1999" was written first and the rest of the album was written to follow that futuristic concept. Andy is a four letter word.
