If Prince had only released disc 3 of Emancipation as a one-disc album, it would be one of my favorites... I was listening to it today, and it hit me that I only dislike La, La, La Means I Love U and Emancipation. If he'd released this as a one-disc album, I would have loved it!
I guess after 8 years I'm finally warming up to this album. Disc 1 was just sooo disappointing. How about if he'd started the entire album with Joint 2 Joint? At least that would have said "you're in for a long, crazy ride".

i like disc 1 okay, but i'm a little cool toward it. i can't listen to disc 2 at all. i didn't like it when i first heard it, and since so much of the lyrics on that disc are about subject matter that ended up more or less sad and tragic, it's kind of a bummer to listen to even if i liked the music in the first place. disc three though, i really liked from the first listen.

I dig # 2 a lot... don't like # 1 at all. "Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies -

eh. i think it would've been even better to cut some songs from disks 1 + 2 and release that as one album, with a different title ... and yeah, disk 3 does kinda work by itself.
the problem with emancipation is that it was a work of pure relief. all this work he had pent up after the WB deal came out in one huge flood. trouble was, who is going to listen to 3 CDs by the same artist? truthfully, even 2 is pushing it for most artists (except outkast and NIN) what makes a man want to rule the world?
a double a double arrogance.

i think if it weren't for all the tragedy and chaos going on in his personal life when that album dropped, he could have put a lot of effort into making this album a bigger statement than he did...i could see him making a video album for "emancipation", and i could see him releasing more singles (and better choices, to boot), and i could see him releasing a remix album of the more popular tracks a la "rave in2" - there were a lot of creative possibilities. i don't know if it all would have amounted to polishing a turd, but i do think that personal matters compromised the potential of this album greatly, and that's an entire conversation on the fate of that album in and of itself.

Weren't there plans to release remix albums of each cd? I swear that I read that circa '96. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Disc 2 is my favorite. Disc three, I could take it or leave it.
But Disc 2 appeals to my lovey side. I had to buy the set twice just for disc 2. (Yes, i need to make copies, just to lazy and forgetful) **************************************************

Actually,I think disc one is the strongest disc.If he had released that as a one-disc album ( perhaps replacing "We Gets Up" with "Emale"),it would have been a classic Prince album.
