IT IS A MAXI-SINGLE.

im sick of figuring out what a MAXI SINGLE is!!!!!

Hmmm... a "maxi-single" contains the single release that is still eligible for the single charts (this track can be accompanied by several other tracks - they don't have to be just remixes), EPs can contain mostly anything and are not categorized as singles - and therefore they cannot chart in the single charts (in fact, in most cases EPs chart at the regular album charts, though practises may vary).

However, there does exist a regular single release of TMBGITW, that contains the song itself and "Beautiful" as an additional track. This was the actual single (it has a picture of prince's ass on the back) that charted. However, it's mandatory for a single release to be titled exactly like the song that is playing on the radio and video channels. So "The Beautiful Experience" really is an EP in the end - I don't think its sales were counted for in the single charts, in fact I think it came out some weeks later the single was first released and had already become a hit.

I remember reading in several music mags at the time that he'd planned
on releasing an EP called "The beautiful Experience" that would have
included different mixes of other songs too, like "Come" and "Race" &
such.

Wish he would have been able to do that instead. But obviously he wasn't
and for some sense of pride with the song and as a piss off at Warners
he must have made this. An album to release when you're not allowed to,
although the album consists of a basic melody that runs through all the
seperate songs, an melody that you were given green light for by WB in
the first place.

Clever.

You're sorta right. Prince had planned an EP release for his birthday in 1993, but WB balked at the idea (the prince album was still being promoted). No one's sure of the exact track listing, but "Peach" and "Pope" were both slated for it.

The Beautiful Experience was intended to be the first of a series of extended maxi-singles in 1994. The followup was suppossed to be The Lovesign Experience, and later (possibly) The Come Experience. Naturally, WB didn't like THAT idea either.

Yeah, "The Beautiful Experience" charted on the Billboard album charts, and didn't do anything to boost the song back up the singles charts. Billboard makes the decision based on price. TBE was simply more expensive than a maxi-single (it was like $7.99 or something) so it charted as an EP, and reached number 92 on the album charts. But curiously, the Staxowax mix was released as a regular cassette single, different from the original TMBGITW single. I think both singles counted towards the original song, but sales of the Staxowax single were so minimal it didn't make a difference. But TMBGITW went gold anyway so it's all good.

"1999: The New Master" was also priced higher than the average single, so it too charted as an EP (no.150 on the album charts) instead of making the single charts. A similar thing happened to the Smashing Pumpkins' song "Zero," but it wasn't the price. They included so many original b-sides on that single that Billboard categorized it as an EP. In addition to price, Billboard determined a single could have no more than 3 or 4 original songs without being labeled an EP. So "Zero" charted at no.46 on the album charts and never reached the singles chart.

Hopefully all that gibberish made some sense!
