Push & Pull, killed by Nikka Costa at Aladdin?

I have to skip 'Push & pull' from the 'Live at the Aladdin'DVD,every time I put it on,'cuz I think that Nikka Costa kills the song at the end!!Who does she think she is?Patti Labelle?Such a shame, 'cuz I love the song and the way Prince
plays his part on the background...

It seemed to me like he urged her on to sing loud, but I agree. She ruined it. Tone it down a few notches for Pete's sake. I'd like to hear the Revolution play that song back in the day with maybe Sheila E. doing Costa's part.

Wait a god damned minute. No you did NOT say "SHEILA E" doing Nikka's part. Nikka Costa is a SINGER. Sheila E is a mediocre studio vocalist AT BEST.

Yeah, you heard me. She'd provide backing vocals deep in the cut so you can hear Prince and his guitar more. Kind of like Erotic City.

Good lord. Some of you are almost as bad as republicans.

It's NIKKA'S song. SHE wrote it.

Sheila herself would tell you that she's not a singer. She's an okay vocalist as long as there's effect on her voice. She couldn't hang with Nikka vocally anytime. EVER.

Stop the madness. Please.

I have to skip her performance too even though I like the song

It would have been cool if they had jammed out together to one

of her more up beat songs Like "Everybodys got their Something"

I hate when people (women usually) hold that note WAY too long like they are

channeling Mariah Carey or something!
If you will, so will I

I'd been listening to this song on Nikka's album since it came out, singing that exact harmony line, and thinking, "Hmm... that sounds kinda Prince-y....".
So, needless to say, I was quietly gratified when I heard this version with our boy singing the same line!

He must have heard me.... Must have!

They can't stop the madness. They don't like any sort of RnB singing or showing of emotion. Unless Prince is doing it. He is always screaming and yelling and it gets not a complaint on this board.

oh, stop it. i love nikka's album. i love her voice. i nearly had a conniption fit the first time i saw the video for "like a feather".

but her caterwauling got on my damn nerves on the vegas CD. if prince ever sang like daffy duck in an old looney tunes cartoon, he'd get on my nerves too.

I didnt really care for the performance either. They should have done an up tempo song. But it wasnt Nikka who ruined it for me in the singing department... it was P!!!! I was thinking to myself "God dude, SHUT UP!!" Ive never thought that b4, but that performance was pretty bad.

live and in person, the performance probably sounded just fine...it's probably the wonky sound editing on that DVD that makes her voice sound like an air raid siren.

sad I have to disagree...I love this track on the DVD - not only do you have Nikka really going for it at the end there, but it really shows Prince as an accomplished accompaniest with both guitar and voice (which is great considering what a hammering he gets for being an ego freak all the time). The opening of the track is really laid back and it builds up to the ending.

Who can blame Nikka? She was side bye side with Prince. biggrin biggrin He was accompanying her. This is a beautiful duet with intense feeling and funky soul. Thanks for reminding me to watch it again.

I think Nikka becomes an instrument toward the end of the song. There was so much powerful energy between Prince and her, she became a channel to this melody. Maybe she just felt totally absorbed in the moment and then unleashed this powerful surge of energy and force. She's a red head right? Her hair color looks natural to me. razz They say red heads can be the feistiest of the all. Anyway, Prince looked like he was enjoying it.

i'll do it. i always do it. i have seen nikka live, and she always blows that song out of the water. honey has a wonderful voice, and likes 2 it off. on the vegas dvd, however, it seemed 2 me like she held back. if she wooulda done her sh@t for real, prince would have plotzed. i can see it now, thext song would just be a jam because he'd be too busy smiling in amazement(now u no he luv a good voice). just go see her live if u can. you''ll see what i mean

I can't stand this song on her CD, but it's one of my fav songs on the Aladdin DVD. P handled the chorus wonderfully; forgive me for sounding partial, ('cause I love Nikka too) but I thought he sounded better than Nikka did on the chorus, and P's guitar part right before the song's tempo change is amazing.

I don't really have a prob with Nikka's boisterous finale, it's the song's tempo change in general that kinda brings it down for me; although the live version is more to my liking. I'm not too fond of the instrumental shift...

I would of loved for them to perform track 2 on her album (forgot the name) or "Like a Feather".

Well I disagree that is my favorite song on the whole DVD and I like the whole DVD. Actually if you hear the original version or at least the one from her music video (It used to be posted on her web-site) she goes wild on that one and she is just singing with an acoustic guitar. I don't know I just love that song with her and Prince and the NPG. Hell I could put up with Vanilla Ice singing that song just to hear that guitar solo Prince lets loose.

Anyway you aren't the first I have heard voice their dis-pleasure with this song but I love it.

Peace

Off topic, but does anybody remember the name of track 2 on Nikka's album? It goes something like "You can choose the rain, but I'll choose the sun" in the chorus. That's a great song! I'd of loved them to do that one...

I agree 200%. The song is sublime in its live version! Nikka's voice is super-powerful! Prince adds a nice 2nd voice and guitar!

Love it! One of the highlights indeed!

As has been stated before, Nikka rocks -- especially, as was the case, on HER OWN SONGS. Sheesh.

Prince does a song live and differently than a studio version, the lot of you eat it up.

Nikka does a song of hers the way she wants live and folks think she's overshadowing Prince. stoned
