HELP! - What is the guy saying at the intro to 'IF I WAS UR GIRLFRIEND'????

Okay..... Go and listen to the intro of 'If I Was Ur Girlfriend' on SOTT.... There is an Orchestra tuning up, then a dodgey wedding tune, then (to me) what sounds like a German Taxi driver saying "Look At The Parkage, Stoppage Here Ladies"

Am I Right? The translation would be "Look at the Parking, I have to Stop here ladies".

Have I got this wrong?

I've listened a good few times. He says PARKAGE not BARGAINS. HE's a German Taxi Driver. Who is he and why did Prince use it?

Much as I repect NouveauDance's comments on most posts. I think you got it wrong this time! Listen again. Why would a German Taxi Driver stop for Bargains?

But he would stop in traffic because there was nowhere to park.

Where do you get the notion that the man speaking is a German taxi driver? confuse

He's clearly a German Taxi Driver. With traffic being busy, he would warn the customers that he cannot park - he stops in the street to let the Ladies out.

Am I the only ORG member who knows a Greman Taxi Driver when I hear one?

It's not my comment, I'm just posting the link to the most respected, and longest running dedicated Prince lyrics site.

I agree it's difficult to hear coherently - but the words "Look at the _____ _____ here ladies" can clearly be heard, it's the couple of words in the middle that are a little muffled/hard to hear.

The sample sounds like a male (possibly African-American) street-trader.

If you think about what DTT Lyrics say the sample says - it makes perfect sense in the context of the song - which is why Prince used it, it wasn't a random sample.

"Look at the bargains over here ladies" - The song is sung from a male POV, a man who wants to share his emotions and inner feelings with his lover - stereotypically what women want, as opposed to the brutish, selfish, emotionally closeted stereotypical male. Prince is the bargain.

Listen to it, "Look at the bargai'sove'ere ladies" - It's said quickly, slurred even.

If I hadn't read it, I wouldn't have thought it said that either, so I'm more than happy for anyone to come up with something more solid, but I really do think that's what is said.

Now if anyone could workout where the sample came from, or whom the line was said by, that would help smile

I always thought he was saying "look at the parkage over here ladies". But it is confusing what he says that's for sure. It's definately NOT "bargains"!

Even though I now know what the line is, I still hear it as I first did, years ago...

"Look at your pa, you suffragette ladies". lol

Uhm, nice hypothesis, except, "Parkage" is not a German word and
certainly not a German word for "Parking".

Neither is "Stoppage" biggrin

It is "Look at the bargains over here ladies".. I believe Prince is trying to establish the theme of the song..THE NATURE OF FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS - which generally consists of confiding in each other, shopping, dreaming about their wedding day (hence the wedding march)... all the stuff that helps to form close bonds between girlfriends... the bond that Prince so desperately wants with this girl!

For what little it is worth, I always thought that it was something along the lines of:

'The wedding party is over here, ladies'

or

'The wedding party's over here, ladies'

So there you have it.

Seeing as this question is asked over and over again, can we perhaps post the answer somewhere so people stop asking??

Ughhh, yeah you do. But you don't seem to want to hear that.

The bigger question is why you seem to be so certain it's a German Taxi driver? The street sounds dont' mean he's taxi driver.

I gotta go listen again but as I remember, it's some street vendor trying to sell crap to people on the street... and i dont thinks his accent is German either.

It's "Look at the bargains over here ladies". It was taken from some movie, it's Robin Williams saying it. That's what I read on an earlier thread.

Are you serious or trying to be funny?

There is no reason to believe it's a German Taxi Driver!!! That is your own delusion.
