Cinnamon Girl is the best choice for a single

I keep hearin people spew out the opinion that Prince has made poor choices of songs for singles. In some instances I agree (Betcha By Golly Wow, The Greatest Romance, etc). However, Cinnamon Girl is the most pop oriented/radio friendly commerical song on the "Musicology" album. The fact that it is or isn't getting airplay on MTV or the radio has nothing to do with it's quality. Everybody knows a good deal of what is played on the air and MTV is not of quality anyways.

I agree completely with you. The song is good, and the message is great. However, from a commercial side, such a political song was definitely going to meet with resistance from (conservative) radio DJ's and station owners. Nevertheless, as long as he keeps playing it at his concerts, it will still have life.

However, I think that the next single should be one of the R&B oriented songs, so that it will be guaranteed serious airplay.

The Song: 'Cinnamon Girl' in my opinion doesn't sound dated!
Its a very good song, it doesn't sound like anything on the radio at the moment!

U2 has the worst song out now!
Yet radio and mtv are all over it and I hate to say this!!!
But if 'Cinnamon Girl' was released by someone else, it wouldve gone further...simply because mtv and radio hates Prince at this point, he's made alot of negative comments towards the radio and video companies...so its definitely gonna be hard to get them to add his songs into heavy rotation!

Of course they jumped all over 'Musicology'...but come on folx, if Prince wouldve released these songs back in the 1980's they would be all over the charts now!

'Call My Name' a gorgeous r&b ballad, took off well on adult urban fm stations...and of course blacks will always support Prince and his genius!

But Mainstream is done with him, unless he kisses major ass and cater to what they want...and that would be for Prince to hook up with todays hottest artist(s) and I guarrantee it will work!

Back in 1999, the rave project didn't work because it was a bitter sweet agreement with Prince and Clive...of course Clive was going through some things himself and then Prince grew impatient and started disrespecting the man publicly...you can't do that if your gonna work with the big dogs and have them work for you.

'Cinnamon Girl' is a great pop song, its better than Lindsay Lohan's Rumor song, or Britney Spears Bobby Brown Remake.
Hell its better than Eminem's Just lose it song!

But because he's made it hard for himself in the mainstream with ppl in the business, of course its gonna be a struggle and the kind of contracts/agreements he signs...which means the lable won't be making money from him...their just pushing a product for nothing, when they got other artist(s) who brings in the bacon.

Prince also has a duty to promote this album and single aswell!
He releases a video without explanation and ppl are all pissed off...just like he changed his name and didn't give the real reason why he changed it!

Come PRINCE, ppl can't read minds!
So If it were me...of course, I wouldve released 'The Marrying Kind' soon after the Musicology single fizzled on Mtv...which they played the hell out of that video and I was so happy to see Prince everyday on 3 video stations!

But 'The Marrying Kind/If I were The Man in your life' would have come out hard!
I would have taken the song to SNL and performed while in NYC for the Madison Square Garden Shows; along with 'A Million Days'- giving the world an ear full of new PRINCE music!

Plus The Today Show- Live Concert Series!
Performed "Musicology, The Marrying Kind/If I were the man in your life & Life O'Party"!

Plus...The Dave Letterman show!!!
I wouldve sat down with the man for our first interview, talked about the album, the tour, and played "Reflection & Take Me With U" Medley with Wendy Melvoin!

Filmed a Video in Ground Zero area of NYC for "A Million Days" and took it to TRL, like he did with TGRE in 1999 to promote Rave!
Plus surprised the audience with an acoustic performance of 'Cinnamon Girl'.

See, thats how you work the media and mainstream, give us what we want and I guarranteed...PRINCE would have had a video after 'Musicology' on MTV in heavy rotation...those were ways of getting not only 'Musicology, but A Million Days and Cinnamon Girl' on the station often.

'Cinnamon Girl' would have still been my choice for 3rd single.
As 'Call My Name' would have went to radio along with 'Musicology' to promote the album prior to its release, to get the word out in the urban areas...that PRINCE has a slammin new Funky and Soulful Album on the way, with a few Pop Ditties!

Now as far as these upcoming award shows go...um, I would have attended the american music awards, atleast introduced 'Gwen Stafani'.

and performed at the Billboard Music Awards!
Basically...rocked the house with a Harder Edge version Of Cinnamon Girl with Explosives and Video Montage behind all the players. Plus a teaser of some new song called 'Glass'

Now thats HOTT!

Yes CM is a good single, and deserves more airplay. But I have to disagree with the idea that Prince should pound the kiddy circuit in search of a bubblegum following. Forget TRL. It would seem weird to see Prince there. He's supposed to be above that (to me). All he needs to do is to focus on his R&B songs, which will all be hits if released! At this stage, he no longer needs to have Top 40 megahits. All he needs to do is to replenish his catalog with fresh music that the people like. Such was the case with Call My Name, which was liked\loved by millions. Besides, any of his R&B-type songs (On the Couch, Dear Mr. Man, Reflections) might eventually CROSSOVER into the mainstream pop venue and even slip into the Top 40. If not, then he would still have a hit song that millions of listeners enjoy hearing.

Same as almost everyone else on this site, I want to see and hear Prince more, but not at any cost. Prince is an awesome artist in every sense of the word, and he should continue to conduct himself like rock royalty. He shouldn't lower himself just for MTV or pop station appeal, especially when R&B stations still give him love. He already has the Urban AC audience on lockdown. Just focus on the Urban side of R&B and eventually he'll CROSSOVER into the pop Top 40.

This is how he can eventually force MTV and the Pop stations to play his great music.

Thanks
