To me, the picture is obviously from the Sign O'The Times era. The hair is styled like that era. Also, I believe his face is smaller in the Sign O'The Times era than Purple Rain (83-84). | |

i would guesse that it was taken around may/june 1984.
he wore the same pants at the 1st ave birthday gig on june 7,1984. not 100 positive as i did not take the photo,but,almost sure it's early summer 1984. | |

I agree with the folks who said this was around the Purple Rain era, gotta agree with that.

Heres what we know.... 1. the BMW didn't come out until 82. 2. The hair is almost as long as it was in Purple Rain, but not quite. As Purple Rain started filming later in 83, it has to be before it. 3. The trousers. If I'm not mistaken, are his first "Flower" clothes. At the 1999 video stage (and the Rolling Stone cover), he was still dying jeans different colours. It wasn't until the 1999 tour in 83 when he got a designer and began wearing the clothes that would eventually define the film. He wears a whiter version of these trousers for the purple rain tour. These trousers (they are more pink that the PR stuff) can be seen in photos on the 1999 tour. Notably, there is a picture in "The Story So Far" book.  DAYUM Can't argue w/ that

I concur w/ the opinions of '83-- and the pic is adorable-- he just looks so damn normal-- one of the best on the org by far... i thought it was an impersonator @ 1st because of this....look how cute he is! Wow, it's amazing that folks are trippin' over this picture. How many times have we seen dudes in this exact same pose leaned up against their car? (like: "C'mon girl, the previews start in twenty minutes, and I ain't missin' that Return Of The Jedi trailer".) Believe it y'all, Prince is, was and always will be a regular dude.

Look at the pants. That's the same suit he had on in a late 1983 or early 1984 concert. he had on black gloves or arm wraps that went all the way up to the lower shoulders.
