MY PRINCE PROJECT

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a mixed CD of Prince songs, old & new. Can anyone please suggest the songs to mix together. It isn't going to be anything high tech. I just want to meld a bunch of songs together. I may add some effects. After I'm done I will share. I'm too lazy to pick any of the million Prince songs that I have.
So do it for me.

It's always good to have a theme.

What about songs about travel or being in different places?

It's hard to answer your question because it's so vague. The guy has hundreds and hundreds of songs, on countless subjects, in myriad styles and personalities. To just say, "give me some names of Prince songs to mix together" is too vague. Give the people a more specific assignment and they'll have fun. mr.green

Are you talking about a d.j. Mix?? Seamless and everyhting?

Or just a c.d. of his best songs?

If you are talking about layering and blending then here goes:

Little Red Corvette (12 Inch) until drums at the end...
Bring in beginning drums of Dirty Mind until it breaks down with the drums...
Bring in opening drums of Controversy until "people call me rude" part...
Bring in Soft And Wet until almost the end...
Bring in I Wanna Be Your Lover until drums break down...
Bring in Head until break down that goes "ooh yeah...
Bring in Let's Work until "work allright, we're gonna work all night"...
Bring in Sexy Dancer until heavy breathing...
Bring in Lady Cab Driver until breakdown towards the end...
Bring in Irresistable Bitch until almost the end...
Bring in Erotic City until one of the breakdowns...
Bring in When Doves Cry until the end...
Start 1999 with "don't worry" until "mommy, why does everybody have a bomb"...
Bring in Partyup until "fight your own damned war"...
Bring in Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad until end.

Yes, it will be seamless. And I do understand that I am being vague. I kind of want to do a mix of songs that are org favorites that were not really hits.

Two more songs that mix really well are "Automatic" and "Computer Blue".

"Kiss" and "D.M.S.R." mix well.

"Let's Go Crazy" (12 Inch), "Delirious", and "Sexuality" mix well.

You're doing it with a computer? A friend of mine lent me some DJ software but I couldn't make heads or toes of it. All I saw was lines and graphs. It looked like a life support machine in a hospital. lol

I did play around with it for a little while and figure out a few things but I could never get them to mix right. I was amazed that the computer could match the beats of two songs no matter how fast one was as compared to how slow the other one was. I played around with making loops but could never make the computer get it on the beat.

I've always mixed with two turntables, two CD players, and a mixer and matched beats by ear with the pitch control and my finger. I've made loops with a cassette deck by using the pause button, burn the loop onto CD, then mix the loop with another song. I would LOVE to learn how to use a computer to eliminate such a long process.

Good luck and tell me how it goes. biggrin

I made my own remix of "Head" that everyone always wants a copy of when they hear it. Hell, I have gone to a stranger's party with a friend and heard my remix (they had copied it for them). biggrin

I extended the intro and the breakdowns in the middle. Then, I mixed in snips of LaWanda Page (Aunt Esther) from her comedy album "Mutha Is Half A Word".

The song starts with Esther screaming..."I want a LOOOONNNG black dick!". Then the song starts. During the intro, I mix in "dick...dick....dick...black dick.....black...black....black....black dick".

When the vocals start, I mix two copies of the vocals at the same time until the song reaches a peak and sounds like it is going underwater.

On the first breakdown, I mix in Esther saying "blow me...blow me...blow me...I said BLOW ME BITCH!" Then I mix in Esther blowing into her microphone a few times and bring her in going "Blow him honey!" before the vocals start.

I mix two vocal copies again until it reaches a peak.

On the second breakdown, I bring in Esther again saying "Do what the whores do! Get smart like the whores do honey! Honey, them whores got money, honey, cause they done took all the money yo huzband had! Do what the whores do honey, and you'll wind up with the minks, and the diamonds, and the furs honey!".

People really trip out and go wild when they hear this remix. lol

You are the real D.J. here. biggrin I can only do it on my computer. sad Oh well it's still really fun. I'm listening to some of my mix right now. I have to slow some tracks down later. I'm going to finish the mix this week then fine tune it. It's not going to be perfect but it should be okay. If you look back at the list you made me I'm up to Irr. Bitch. I'm almost done. I would love to hear your Wanda mix it sounds hella funny. On this mix I'm just doing it straight I'm not peppering it with my creativity. I use a program called ACID. I love it. I wish I could afford PRO TOOLS. My best friend has it. But he has a MAC. I don't like MACS. He's a real D.J. so he can really use it to the maximum.

You should try a program called FruityLoops (FL Studio). Its quite easy to get your head around the basics. You can create loops, programme your own drum beats etc etc... I made a 'mix' of some P songs from Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999. Certain songs you can take out 'snippets' and use as a sample to create a seamless mix between two tracks or have a common underlying groove for different tracks.

You could also 'beef' up the drums with some basic drum loops of your own to create a 'bigger' sound and to also have a more seamless mix.

It can be quite time intensive to get it right, but its not that complicated once youre familiar with the basics. Once the mix is done you just need to tweak with the EQ of the whole mix, add some compression and you can end up with a pretty good remastering of some old classics...

Unfortunately its not possible to get hold of the seperate trax that make up a Prince song (as far as I know), so you are always limited in what you can take out of a song and create a loop with it. But you could, for example, take the drum and bass from the beginning of the song Controversy, create a loop out of it and play it underneith the mix so that it is still playing under the next track...

Does anyone know what happened with that million CD compilation of samples from Princes entire back catalogue that he was going to sell for a million bucks?

Hey, thanks for the advice. I do have Fruity Loops as a matter of fact. It is a very cool program. I'm still trying to get the hang of it. It's definately something that works by trial and error. I hope everyone that hears my finished mix bears with some of the mistakes.

I've never been a DJ professionally, I've just been doing it for fun since the early, early 1980s with rigged up turntables, a cassette deck, and a pause button. A few years ago, I bought a mixer, two turntables, and two CD players with pitch control so I've really been having a ball. I did DJ in club once, for a few months in 1994, as a favor to a friend that managed the club. That was the first time I ever worked with professional equipment. I quickly got the hang of it and that experience taught me a lot.

How's your mix sounding by the way? The track list I gave you is from a mix CD I did myself a few months ago. With your's being done on a computer, your mix can probably overlap between songs for a longer period of time than mine. Doing it by hand, the beat can get away from you if you don't watch out so if you feel the beat getting away from you, you have to fade it out before it's noticeable.

Like I said, a friend of mine lent me some computer software. I will probably buy me some eventually.

Thanks! I will definately keep that name in mind. If I could master a program like that, I would probably never leave the house.

I will probably buy me some eventually.[/quote]

My mix is coming along. I had almost finished it but what I had finished had "clipped". I was pissed. I re-did it. It's sounding okay though. Some beats were hard to match. Some of the middle songs are too fast. I need to slow them down a little. What's good about my program is that you can speed up or slow down a song without changing Prince's pitch. So he never sounds like a chipmunk.
If I had what you had right now, I wouldn't leave the house. I eventually want to get two turntables and a mixer. I'm really into deep house and garage house. I want to use them for that.

I can't wait until I'm done so I can start another Prince project. I don't know what songs they will be. Did you see the lists the others posted. Damn.
