GRAFFITI BRIDGE - ORIGINAL LONG VERSION

Has anyone seen the original long version of "Graffiti Bridge" before they cut it down to the 90 minute music video it is now? I mean I heard that the original version was almost 4 hours long? What happened to that extra footage? Does anyone have it or know where I can get any of it? This has been bothering me ever since the movie first came out in 1990! Back then there were rumors that a promo tape of the movie was circulating, but I've never found it anywhere! I think it would have been better appreciated if they hadn't cut so much out of it! confused

There isn't a four hour version of it floating around. The only things that were edited out were a few songs (Can't Stop among others).

The main editing they did was with story. They shuffled around elements of the movie (instead of starting with Morris and The Time at the table, they started with the explosion of the club, or other scenes)

Mostly, the movie was poorly planned, written and executed. A few of the songs are good, but the movie is farily unispired, no matter how long the version you see spends on screen.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

You just know he cut the shit out of that movie...and left a lot it, of course.

But the trailer for the movie is the most telling. The best line from the movie was cut. When the Time enter Glam Slam in the beginning of the film, and Prince says, "The King has arrived," and Morris responds, "Guess who the queen is?" Best line in the movie until it got cut.

How about Miko's 40-minute monologue... Tragically cut from the original version.... "Best actor in a supporting role" anyone? eek

That's why it seems like such a waste that the DVD version has NO extra footage, other than a few tiny clips in the trailer that weren't in the movie.

I read a couple of versions of the original script and there was much more to the story then. It was much more of a "Purple Rain" sequel. For example, there was a scene where The Kid visits his mom in hospital. There was also a scene where Aura and The Kid plays "Hangman" with a rope and she kicks a chair out from under him with a rope around his neck eek (I guess to remind us of the scene in Purple Rain where The Kid envisions himself hanging from a wooden beam). There's also the scene where Aura paints a heart on The Kids shirt that says Love (heart) Me like in the lyrics of "Joy In Repetition". (That scene is in one of the versions of the video for "New Power Generation"). Anyway, I just think the whole thing would have been better understood if it hadn't been cut so much. When it first came out I thought that in spite of it's poor production, the overall message was beautifully spiritual. It played at my local theatre for 17 days and I saw it 17 times! I recently saw the rough-cut videos for "The Latest Fashion" "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" and "The Question of U" and I cried....I mean how could they cut out Prince (The Kid) and The Time performing "The Latest Fashion" in the street as part of the "battle"?? It would have been a classic scene! I heard that "We Can Funk" was originally shot with Prince (The Kid) and George Clinton performing it together also! mad

Yeah, I would have liked to see what would have happened to Grafitti Bridge if Prince hadn't been given total creative control. In the hands of a competent director, it may have been something not so embarrassing.

You saw it 17 times, huh? Damn, I barely made it through the first time.

The funny thing is that this movie is proof positive that Prince had a lot more freedom while at Warner Bros than he wants us to believe. Honestly, they should have pulled the plug on this crapfest before it ever got shot. It's like soaking cash in kerosene and setting it on fire.

I heard that it was Warner Bros that did most of the editing, not Prince! Prince was so upset with the final result that he walked out of his own premier in New York and sat in a corner at some club and sulked! sad

LMAO!! My favorite line in GB! The band is tryin to get Prince to come to the club to see this new girl...Prince: "She fine, huh?"...to which Miko responds with his fingers also, if I remember correctly, "Man, she's THREE fine!"...killed me! I use it to this day. People dont know where it comes from of course, but if im ever describing a very hot gurl for whatever reason, I always say..."Man she's THREE fine!"

...u know...like TOO fine!

Here is a little info on what was cut from Graffiti Bridge. It also has some info on Under the Cherry Moon. A great little read.
