Prince #2 to only Madonna On VH1, they did a countdown of TV's most censored artists and Prince was #2. It was very intresting to watch espically seeing how I'm a semi-rookie.
In the 10 minute segment they talked to Prince and he was talking about the song "Let's Go Crazy." He said the elevator that he refers to means the devil. It is suppose to be a religious song where he will not the devil take him or you (the listener) down to hell. He said he used that metophore because you could not talk about the devil back in when he made Purple Rain. Did ya know that? What do ya think? Peace the VILLE I Just Heard the "Question of U" for the 1st time...MY GOD that is an awsome song. That is #1 right now. I gotta go & listen 2 it again! WoW!

I saw that too. What really struck me anout that list was how the "violence" oriented acts were ranked lower on the offense-o-meter than the sexually provocative artists were. Says a lot about what the mainstream dubs "offensive" or "too hot". I never got what was so "offensive" about Madonna or Prince.
Violence=good, sex=bad:(

I'm tired of hearing him make that comment about not being able to talk about God and the Devil back in the 80s. Ridiculous. He could have done whatever he wanted- God and the Devil have always been referenced in pop and rock music. By name.
What he doesn't seem to get is that those lyrics of his were great metaphors, and really helped color his musical message. He talks about them now like they were the product of a gag order. He didn't say "God" and "the Devil" in Let's Go Crazy because he knew that it was a big single and he didn't want it to sound overtly religious. He was smart and that was business. I hate how he just makes stuff up. Like in the liner notes to Emancipation's Mr. Happy, it says "Usta play this in Paris after somebody swang weak. 80-proof bomb from the land o' lakes." Used to play "Mr. Happy" in Paris? When? Before Emancipation came out? What show(s) is he supposed to be talking about? "Used to" implies that it was something done more than once or twice. Has anyone ever seen anything that would back this statement up? Sorry- that just drives me crazy. ...: s l o w l y c a n d l e b u r n s :...

As he mentioned in the CB book, he used to play "Da Bang" in his limosine. So he could mean that he played the song in private after seeing someone swing weak, and then it ended up on Emancipation.
