What is "The Marrying Kind" about anyway?... a sugar mama

I love the song "the marrying kind".. my favorite on the album, in fact.. but i tell you, i cannot figure out what it is about. At one point he's telling a guy that he'll take away his woman, then he's talking about how she's going to buy him shit, and how she needs to lose weight. What the f*** is that about?

Any ideas?
Come here, babe.. yeah...

This song is about a man who treats his woman carelessly and is going to break up with her. Prince wants her and is saying to him that if he breaks up with her he will get her. Prince realizes that she is a "catch" so to speak and wants to be with her. (Honey I tried to tell him that you were the marrying kind. A faithful one man woman, best he would ever find. I guess he wasn't trinying to hear that so ain't nothing left to say. I tried to tell him if you run to me I won't run away.) This is my favorite song on the album too because it tells the story of how I got with my wife. My best friend was dating her and wanted to break up with her because he wanted to play around and travel and all this crap. I told him that she was an awesome girl and that he needed to stay with her. He didn't listen and now we are married and he hates me because he realized what he missed. Great song. The opening lyrics are exactly what I told him before he broke up with her and I still gives me chills whenever I hear the opening line to the song. If you leave her now you're never gonna see her again.

I hate this song, because it precisely tells the story of how I got 'without' my wife.

Listened to it once, don't know if I'll ever be able to do it again.

It's always sort of cool when you get to swap women.

This song always makes me sad and wonder if the woman even knew she was loved by another man.

This is one of my favorite tracks on the album, too. It only has one drawback, and that's how he managed to date the track with the line, "I'm gonna put her on the same diet Missy went on..."

Other than that, excellent track.

Sign O' The Times is dated by the "Hurrican Andrew" reference. Doesn't make it any less great in my book.

Something about the song makes me think it's about Angie Stone and D'Angelo.

bheart I don't think she knew that! - If she's a one man woman, she'll stay with her thoughs and feels by her man, till it's over. And if she isn't loved by her man, she'll don't feel the love from another, because she's by her man with her feels. So when the marriage is divorced, maybe after many, many years, if..., then she will believe in tha love from another man, maybe. That one is a one man woman. And the new man should can do conquer her bheart heart, but it isn't easy, no ways. If he does and he cares after, he has that woman 4ever. And he know that.

So i seem to be in the minority here... but let me plead my case... if he's so into this woman, why is he saying things like "she's going to miss you at first, then she's gonna buy me things" and i'm gonna put her on the same diet Missy went on, you know she eat too much"..

Guys, these are not loving comments... help me understand.. help me.. help me...!! neutral

This song is not meant to be romantic and loving toward a woman.

It is making a statement about the 'possession' of women. Tooooo many men think they should scoop up a woman and marry her because she's the marrying kind. You know, the kind of woman that would make your momma proud.

Well, what does the woman get outta that? blah blah blah - it ain't about her in the end, only a nucklehead man who got himself a catch that will take care of him all his days.

boooooring!

you're right altavista - not loving comments at all, but a statement of how not to view a woman. The last line of the song says it all. The man is only looking out for himself. Combine that with the Italian narrative...ah hem.

I SOOOOO agree with you. What is the marrying kind? to me she is: slightly overweight (sorry, but it's true), a great cook, and a passive girl who will do whatever the hubby says. BORING!!! The husband STILL cheats on the MARRYING KIND b/c he married her for WHAT SHE CAN DO FOR HIM (washing, cooking, cleaning, sewing) not for TRUE LOVE!!! To me, a man looking for "the marrying kind" is looking for a slave, not a wife
