vainandy said: I read about it in the book "Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince". According to the book, Dez said he was booed off the first night. He said the audience was not ready for a song like "Jack U Off". He said Prince was ready to leave town and forget about the second show but was convinced to come back the next day. By this time, all the people that had attended the first show had told their friends about it so the second audience not only booed him but also came with fruit and other objects to throw. Dez said the other band members tried to console him by telling him that this was not his type of audience anyway and Prince responded by saying "Just wait, they will be in a few years". I have the book Possessed and read it 2 and he could have said it but I don’t remember Dez saying that. And if he did he may have exaggerated on the incident. Further more the people were searched when coming into the stadium. I can’t see everyone coming in there with fruit and further more if someone was going 2 throw fruit they would have been seated on the ground level close 2 the stage and even then it would have been hard because of the security protection they have. The seating on the ground was pretty far from the stage and heavily secured with security so if they did throw fruit or whatever at him security would have stopped it immediately and thrown there ignorant asses out of there in a hurry. The Coliseum security don’t play that shit. The Coliseum is located right in the heart of the ghettos and they’re ready 2 take your ass 2 jail and u can believe a lot of people went 2 jail that 1st night. Further more it’s loaded with security and plain clothes men and undercover cops. They can’t stop the booing but they would not have allowed them 2 throw anything on stage. Half the things Hahn wrote in that book was questionable anyway. Again he could have gotten booed the 2nd night which I’m totally unaware of and I will stick 2 that story until I have actual facts and it wont be from Hahn. According 2 the L.A. Times Prince performed 3 songs the last night of that concert.

Times Prince performed 3 songs the last night of that concert. I only read the book once and I tried to read the first part of it very slowly, paying close attention because the early years are the ones I was interested in most. I could be wrong but I do believe it states that it was Dez that said these things. One of the band members at that time said it, according to the book anyway. I had no problem with the early part of the book until it got into the friction between Prince, Lisa, and Wendy and the alledged comments he made on their sexuality and later comments he made with Larry Graham about them also. I hope the book is unreliable also. Like I said, I read it only once over last year's Thanksgiving weekend and then gave it to a friend as a Christmas present. Speaking of more unreliable sources, I also saw an episode of VH1's "Rock and Roll Jeapordy" and one of the contestants said he used to work security at that arena. He said when Prince opened for the Rolling Stones, the audience "began throwing things and pelted his ass". Andy is a four letter word.

That’s way 2 funny Vainandy! Trust and believe me if P had gotten pelted by an object thrown by someone in the audience we would have heard about it. Thanks 4 the info.

Mark even talks about being hit with a bucket of chicken on the second night, and his bass going out of tune. Prince left the tour due to the poor audience response both nights, and not just because of the opening night. In this instance, Possessed is correct.

Keith's such a sad cliche old-school rock guitarist. And what makes it all the more satisfying is when, in the Undertaker video, Prince gets some '81 vengance and steals and totally gives rebirth to Honkey Tonk Woman, showing Keith how a fucking lead rock guitar SHOULD be played.
School's in session Keith - wipe away those tears and watch how a guitar is meant to be played...

So its not mine tipe shouting against any artist, but opening for the Stones isnt very easy for anyone.
they are a rock audience, waiting for a long time to see what they paid for so come on,would you like to see Metallica opening a Prince Musicology show?and before them another 30 minutes show of Ozzy Osborne? Maybe i am exagerating, but for them, rock fans Prince probably looked like a skini gay mutherfoker with a ridiculous outfit. But i loved your story anyway!

I love Prince at the guitar one of my favorites, but you should respectKeith for what hes done for rock, and Keith should respct Prince.

I could care less whether u care or not about my story in seeing P for the first time. Check out the people that viewed this topic. This is a Prince web site. Everyone gets on this site and talk about whatever they want 2 talk about pertaining 2 him and about him, so this gave me the opportunity 2 share my story. The people I know and associate with are not into Prince so this is more than a pleasure 2 be apart of this site and communicate with P fans. So many of you are knowledgeable of him and I have the utmost respect 4 U because of that. A lot of the things people talk about on this site are from a long time ago. So what’s your point in pointing this out 2 me?

Maybe something small, defiantly not a bucket of chicken and further more they weren’t selling chicken in the Coliseum. This is a money making business. There money is from gate sales, food and novelty stands. The food being sold at that time was and still is hot dogs, sodas in paper cups, popcorn, peanuts etc. So I find it funny that you mention what Mark Brown said about being hit with a bucket of chicken. How can u be hit with a bucket of chicken from a far distance without all the chicken falling out of the bucket? I feel there is some exaggeration put into his story. I don’t believe half the things Hahn said about P anyway. Hahn didn’t paint a good picture of P imop. Was Dr Fink with them at the time? [Edited 11/11/04 16:34pm] Dr. Fink was with Prince from the very beginning. I've heard several versions of the story also. Some sound reasonable and some sound far fetched. As far as the possibility of fruit and other items being snuck into the arena, that is 100% possible. Look at all the drugs and alcohol that are snuck in. As for security not allowing the throwing, a few security guards and policemen cannot control an angry mob. As far as which version is true, I don't know because I wasn't there. But it is very possible to sneak items in and it also possible to throw them in the presence of security. Andy is a four letter word.

No, I don't think the booing in the beginning of "Pop Life" is from that Stones concert. I think that came from a sound effects album, maybe even the same one (or same series) that contained the baby laugh in "Delirious".

I'm a tad that you didn't give me a heads up that you had finally posted this.
But that's cool. The point is that you finally did it. I was there on the floor of the Coliseum, don't remember which show, but the booing did occur. I seem to think the order of acts was different (George Thorogood and The J.Geils Band) but it's been over 20 years. This my recollection of what happened distortions and all. He went into Jack U Off and at some point in the tune asked for audience participation. Something to the effect of "When I count 3, I want you to say Jack Me Off." The 1st time he did this, the 100K plus crowd roared back at him "FUCK YOU". I guess this was an indication of how unseasoned he was at the time because to my amazement he tried it again. Another "FUCK YOU" was received. This caused him to leave the stage in a huff. At this point the promoter, Bill Graham came out and gave the crowd a tongue-lashing about having respect for an artist that was trying to perform. Prince came back onstage but the crowd was not having it. Amidst more catcalls and booing, he exited the stage for good. During one of these exits, the Hohner was slammed to the floor of the stage. Your description of the crowd's inebriated temperament was right on point. Don't know if you remember the Floor vs. Stands ice fight. Your analysis as to why the booing occurred is probably accurate. I'd add that for this particular crowd, including a relatively unknown funk/rock act like Prince with more familiar (to them) blues based acts like George Thorogood, J.Geils and the Stones, was more than their tripping, sun-stroked, pot-baked, "We want the Stones now" minds could handle. Bill Graham used to put on shows featuring divergent acts all the time at the Fillmore East in NYC. I remember Los Angeles Times saying that the same people that booed Prince off stage were the same people waiting in long lines 2 see him perform at the Forum when he toured here for the Purple Rain Concert in 1984.
This has always been an interesting observation to me as I also attended 2 of those Forum shows and was tempted to ask some of the folks sitting around me if they had been at the Coliseum shows in '81 and what their impressions were. To me it was just another indication of the fickle trend-following L.A. music scene in general.
