no no no! not true...mj is a songwriter, musician and a performer...

lets not belitle one artist to make ourselves feel better about liking another, k?

thumbs up!

yeah...remember that the next time you try to do that with Prince and Wendy & Lisa.

If you're talking commercially then PR and Thriller made P and MJ respectively. Artistically speaking then I'd agree that it destroyed MJ as he didn't make another great work. Personally too, it helped him on his way to la la land.

As for Prince, he went on to make SOTT, the album that established him critically as a 'genius' and a string of other successful albums. It also afforded him a 20th anniversary year and I guess I don't have to point out how well he's done this year.

Interesting statement but what's your criteria?

then he drops around the world in a day.
which sounds nothing like purple rain. thats the first nail in the coffin, then he releases parade. which @ the time probly sounded just as weird if not weirder than atwiad. alot of people were probly threw with him.
and even tho he went on to gain some more fans and make the amazing lovesexy, diamond and pearls and so on..i think purple rain was the beginning of the end of his career. when people think of prince they think of purple rain as if thats the only record he ever recorded.

I know COUNTLESS numbers of people that held on through "Around The World In A Day" thinking the next album would be different. When they heard the weirdness of "Parade", that was it...they were through. There have been songs that have been exceptions that they enjoy like "Adore" or "Scandalous" but they didn't buy the albums because they knew the "old Prince" was not back and they would be burned just like they were with "Around The World In A Day" and "Parade".

The fans that left him that act like "Purple Rain" was the only album he ever recorded were the pop fans. Prince had a huge R&B following since the beginning of his career. There was rock, as well as R&B, on all the earlier albums but it took the pop world years later to catch up when they heard "Little Red Corvette".

As much as I love "Purple Rain", the album and the movie, I almost wish it had never been released because it made him such a huge star that he could afford to stop being cutting edge.

Are you saying that ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy were not cutting edge? eek

Yes. They are good albums but they lack the hardness, power, and strength of the earlier albums that with the first listen, you immediately say "Prince". They don't sound like Prince. They sound like Prince's influences growing up...James Brown, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, etc.
Andy is a four letter word.
