I think it has to do with his voice. How many sax players do you know that sing? Satchmo of course, but his voice is....unique. Everybody complains that Candy can't sing well on Life of the Party.
I can't think of any other sax player that sings so it's seems like you train your throat to do one or the other. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'd prefer to see him play the trumpet - and given his fascination with Miles Davis, I'd be surprised if he's never played it to a reasonable degree.

Maybe he don't "blow", but lately, a lot of his songs do. *****************************************

Nah this has nothing to do with the throat, probably more to do with the fact that there's only so many instruments you can master, if it's about how many instruments you play rather than how well you play them then you become "jack of all trades and master of none", which is doesn't really seem to fit Prince's high standards of musicianship. He is, as has been pointed out enough times on these pages, one of the best guitar players around, Whatever the past may have been I don't think he's interested in just "looking cute" ... If you listen to Candy's vocals on her last album she really can sing, it's just that not everyone likes her style, which sometimes is par for the course amongst "fans" who like to critise everyone except Prince. Finally, most saxophone players would rather attain mastery of one type of sax, (Alto, Tenor, Soprano), which would suggest that a degree of mastery is attained by working at one instrument.

Doh! I meant to make the point about horn players in general.

It's quite simple -- the sax was too heavy for Prince to hold

There was also a brief mention of a saxophone lying around in Prince and Andre Cymone´s room in one of the Prince bios. All this still doesn´t say anything though. But who knows, I wouldn´t be surprised to hear that he´s quite good for a non-saxophone player.
I remember Candy saying it made her giggle, but he's not very good at it.

I'm pretty sure of these 3 things:
1. Prince can not play the saxophone If he could, we would have heard it by now, on records as well as in live performances... Prince wouldn't miss such a chance to show off his versatility, plus the sax would fit in well with a lot of his music, plus it's often perceived as a sensual and "sexy" instrument, especially by women...of course he would use it if he could! 2. Prince would like to be able to play the saxophone For reasons mentioned above. 3. Prince would like us to believe that he can play the saxophone Therefore he might occasionally lie about it (or at least not deny it) in interviews and such.
