i think some shows don't give artists the option to perform live - i don't know if that's still a popular way to go with music television shows, but i think every single performance on solid gold back in the day was lip synched. when prince was on there, he certainly lip synched. nod

Many artists used to sing live on "Soul Train" in the 1970s.

At award shows, they have loads of people performing, if they all played live, they would all need roadies to rush in and set up each and every band's equipment, amps etc which is just impractical and stops the flow of the show. On a normal concert they of course just leave the instruments there once set up. Plus each band would need longer rehearsal time to get the sound levels, etc correct, they'd have to rent the building out for weeks before the show get enough time for everyone. And you get bands that just fly in for the performance, so they haven't time to set up a complete show.

So I'm pretty sure just for practical reasons, they ask some bands to mime.

Prince (and Elton John) were talking about not miming at CONCERTS not tv shows. Anyway, it's easy for Elton, all he needs is a piano setting up...

That's correct.I have many tapes of this show from the early 70s,and it was amazing to see all of these live performances. But sometime in the 80s,the show changed course and most artists began lip-syncing.

i read somewhere the performers were mandated to lip-sync to the record.

I remember the roots had to do this, so they lip-synced over a live recorded version of you got me with jill scott

I'll never forget when Fishbone was on Soul Train. They were so not used to lip synching that they really made it funny and obvious that they were not really playing.

Most artists lip synched back in the day on television shows because of time constraints they didn't have time for set up, sound checks and all that, they had to get in there and get out. While some solo artists would perform live to backing tracks, everyone mostly lip synched. Of all the performances I saw of early day Prince, he lip synched. I remember that Don Kirschner's Rock Concert was one of the few shows late night that presented artists singing live and in a concert situation. I do remember some acts on the Tonight Show performing live as well as SNL - many acts performed live.

With technology being what it is todya, it is possible to do a live set without too much trouble. Yet, with the complicated recordings and backing tracks that many pop singers have, it's almost impossible to reproduce a decent sound live or be creative and talented enough to pull off doing a song live that has multiple layers of backing vocals and tracks running while the lead vocal is being sung. Also, most pop songs have all these dance moves in them and there is no way they can exert such movements and be able sing at the same time without sounding out of breath, so most pop singers elect to lip synch and put the brunt of their performance in the "dancing" feeling it would excite the audience more to see them doing cool dances and not just standing there and singing.

I really don't care if they lip synch or not on television. If I like a song, I will listen to it. But I don't think it's fair to the people to lip synch in concert after they've paid money to see an artist. That's where I draw the line.

Yes I agree! But one more which was his WORST Lip Sync, not in the quality but the WHY the hell did you??

Emanicaption "Happy Birthday Mayte" eek That special which was on all 3 music networks.there was a a few numbers in their lip synced? IF he blasted that performaces when the world was watching to see what he would do on his own, after he left Warner Bros. Prince would have been bigger quicker.

Sure he is a top 3 Artist now & just the shit again cool But in 1996 he could have been bigger! But then other the hand he did make $23 Million that year. it could have been more

If you look at some of his early televised performances like "I Wanna Be your Lover or Why You wanna Treat me so bad. YOu'll see he lip sung on both of those tracks.
"Thinking like the Keys on Prince's piano, we'll be just fine"
