I was going to buy Emancipation from a store that sells, buys and trades CD's. I noticed it had a drilled hole in the lower left hand corner of the CD case
Also, I bought Rave UN2 The Joy and the CD case is white. I was wondering if it was a promo CD or something like that. And please don't laugh at me , I'm serious. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

I've heard that they are extra CDs, when the record company makes too many CDs. The CD itself may be new, but they punch the case to turn it into a used CD.

That's a very valid question, 1sexymf, as I'm sure not a lot people know that. Dook hit it generally correct.

To be more specific, artists and their associated lables typically "drill holes" through the UPC code on their product (CDs, tapes) to prevent anyone from re-selling the product after it was given away as a promotion.

for silly reasons of technicality, it's been "defaced" so that it can be sold for a low price in the cut-out bins. hence the name, "cut-out bins".

that's my story and i'm stickin' to it.

I never really understood the whole 'cut out' concept myself.

After a store sends back an album to the manufacturer because it won't sellthey cut it out and sell it back to the store at a much reduced price and the cut-out ensures that the store cannot resell the cd at the normal full price.

Also all copies of the Rave cd were manufactured with a white case. It was done for artistic reasons I suppose.

Yes , i bought Emancipation last Saturday here in Holland (because the 1st one
got stolen) and it also had those drills in the cover
It was only 8 euros (around 10 $ since 1 dollar is 0,7843 euro)
(btw what a coincidence , bought those 2 albums last Saturday)

Sometimes there's a hole punched in the tray artwork, other times, the booklet has a corner nipped out of it, in both instances the case is left intact. Some cases also may get a saw mark through the hinge area.

The holes in the middle of the CD allow the CD to sit nicely in the player...As far as I can tell, most of the CDs I own have them. The ones that don't have them are typically made out of cardboard and have some sort of beer logo on them - they don't really play that well unfortunately.

but i had something strange happen to me like 3 summers ago.....ok i had bought the janet jackson all for u cassete (i needed a copy for my car!!!) and when i opened it it looked as if someone had took a marker and karked the top of it it plays perfectly well but im always wondering y they would mark it

I have a few imported US cassette singles which look like they've had chunks taken out with a hacksaw.

They weren't cheap when I bought them either - so it can't be to devalue them. Is this just a US thing?
