Does anybody know the name of the percussion instrument Prince uses in certain songs?

2 clarify what I mean - here are some songs where it's heard:

In "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" u hear it a quick 3 times in the intro right after the "explosion".
In the drum loops of "When Doves Cry", "Let's Go Crazy", "Computer Blue", and "1999" among many others especially in the 80s.

Is it like a special bongo or tom-tom or something?

I've heard of the Linn drum machine. I'm just not sure what the instrument itself is described as. I've never heard anyone but Prince use it. Oh, I take that back - Ready For The World used it in "Oh Sheila".

In the Linn settings, it's called a 'sidestick'.

A rhythm Stick

A gated Stick

and its slowed down in tempo, sometimes added with a sound effect to make it sound even more Paisley-er.

Hope that helped since no one got it right here yet.

Actually - it is specifically called a 'rimshot' on the Linn LM-1 Drum Computer.
