was prince making fun of rap music with this song?
if he was,why then he jumped on the band vagon in the early 90-es?
he even put rap in alphabet st.

Prince + rap = "make it stop please!!"

I think prince began to critize hip hop because he sucked at it so much.....

I've never felt this was a criticism of hip hop in general, only the bad hip hop artists who began to believe their own hype.

The clue is in the line, "The only good rapper is the one who is dead on it' implying that there ARE good rappers out there.

And most rappers CAN't sing, Prince was just pointing out that they shouldn't regard themselves as good pop singers in the traditional sense.

Back then, remember, hip hop was in it's infancy and only a few really good artists around.

Besides, Prince pulled the album, mostly because he recognised it had too much of a negative vibe running through it. You can't really hold him to a song he never wanted published in the first place.

I love that song.....funny and funky too! I reckon he is only taking the piss in a lighthearted way, as the song is hardly negative or angry sounding is it? He just pokes fun at it thats all.....I reckon it's the best song off the album, but then I like Tony M too!

"Dead on It" - I like it. It's funny. I'm pretty sure he had some particular rapper in mind when he wrote this song, don't ask me which one though!

I always thought he was making fun of rap in this song. I read somewhere that some of Prince's associates said he was furious that he even had to share the same charts with rappers. That's why I've always said that he sold out to rap in the 1990s. He doesn't need to join 'em, he needs to beat 'em.

Prince is right when he says that rappers,usually,are tone deaf..
That's why I like Prince so much when he raps:Funky,perfect timing,and sooo rhythmic, it's scary...To me he's one of the best rappers around!

Rap does take skill. Prince is very skilled. It has just become hip to bash his rapping and hip-hop influenced music. The Black Album was influenced by hip-hop. Hate if U like, but without his hip-hop rap influence we wouldnt have tracks such as Gett Off, Bob George, Pussy Control, My Name is Prince, Come On, ICP & C, and too many other great tracks to list.
