The man seriously needs to put something fresh out. How much stuff did he have out in the 80's? i seriously miss 80's Prince. i know he's older now and blah blah blah, but he can still sing, write, and produce. and it's not like he has kids and stuff to take care of. no reason? the hype was from the mainstream media, maybe as a long time or at least hardcore fan you felt the hype would equal something that would interest you but to most people prince doing a major tour, and releasing a major label album is a big thing, so to them the hype would be justified. obviously as a hardcore fan you feel (and i mean you plural not you in particular) that prince has always been touring and releasing, but to most people they don't give a shit unless there is hype! plus he's had a hit album, with his highest charting in a decade.

yeah but why do you do that? why would you expect an album to beat stuff he was knocking out in his prime without a care? this album was always about appealing to the average person, not the hardcore. no offence but i thought it was pretty obvious. i can see your disappointment but stil! i don't know why you feel musicology is a long ass jam session cos i dont think there's any song that doesn't fit a radio length format easily on there. plus, obviously prince is gonna sound like james brown at times, its one of his biggest influences, its been there since the beginning! listen to the live version of irresitible bitch on the syracuse video. i see what you mean about feeling it wasn't princes funk, but princes funk stopped a long time ago, the sound of 1999 etc, he stopped that in the 90s and showed his JB influence abit more etc

I've been listening to his old stuff, cuz i really don't like his new stuff. And i know that JB is one of his influences, DUH. he even said that "he admires the control he had over his band" (something like that...)When P came out with new stuff in the 80's, it wowed us. I didn't get that from Musicology. It kinda sounds half assed for him. I didn't get the same mindblowing experiences i got from SOTT, ATWIAD, Lovesexy, and 1999. I couldn't believe it was him. I kinda liked Musicology when it came out. I thought it would grow on me, and it didn't. I'm just really not feeling it. And another thing, earlier someone made a thread about how boring Prince was this year, and nobody chewed her out for it.

glamslamlad.....I felt the way you do for quite a while until recently. I didn't understand why we seemed not to be getting much product in recent years compared to the amount I thought Prince wanted to put out which was part of the reason for leaving Warner. He always used to talk about how it was real when "James was dropping four wreckas a year and on the road the whole time" and I thought we wouldn't have to wait so long for a live set etc etc

Prince has said recently that he's learned that you have to be careful about releasing product and I don't think he used to believe it would be a problem to put outloads and loads of CDs. But regardless, we've had more stuff, and a greater diversity of stuff than from any of his 80's contemporaries. Nobody else of his stature has come even close to the musical breadth between The Truth, Kamasutra, NEWS, Xpectation, One Nite Alone. have you actually spent much time with any of the above because even without any other music, there's a tonne of depth and lastability in all of them to dig around in.

anyway, glamslamkid, its almost like you haven't followed princes career since 1988 or something. havent you learned since d&p, come, emancipation, rave? i dont know what made you think this time woudl be different. i was pleasantly surprised at musicology cos i thought it woudl be far more commericial and boring than it is.

re: the cinnamon girl package, i think its just an example i was talking about with littleredcorvette1 about how prince is still doing interesting things. the whole package i find quite fascinating. i know you say boring but really you're just saying you don't like the music, which is fair enough

but prince has release a retail single with 3 political songs on it, i don't think he's ever been so explicit. first we have cinnamon girl which is about race crimes against arab americans in america post 9/11, then dear mr.man which is a general rant against the govt. then united states of division
which has princes most explicit views on race etc he's said in awhile surely?

"i love my country but i love god more"
"why sing god bless america and not the world?"
then he sings of peace and harmony in the world and it says "black white straight gay christian muslim"

doesnt that remind you of "black white peurto rican everybody justa freakin' and the controversy lyrics? yeah this time he's not on about sex and partying, he's grown up now. the song came out on the download store and i didnt read a single person that looked at the song in any way other than the chorus of "do do do do do do's"

but everyone was worried about princes views now he's a JW, but he's still singing the same message 23 years after controversy.

on top of all that, the songs over 6 minutes long! nothing on musicology comes close to this length (i dont think) either.

i mean, i just find it really interesting prince saying stuff like i love my country, because i dont think i can think of any songs where he's very patriotic.

he said recently if you know my songs you know me, and alot of people scoff at that but if you look at his songs over his career you can get a fairly good idea of who he is.

on top of all this he releases a live album track as another bside! i cant think of any examples of him doing this but im sur ehe probably has done, but it is still a rariety, and for a single without much promotion, he didnt need to put it on, but he even put a video of it on! why do you think this was? its given him a single with 3 political songs on it, its quite a bold statement really considering how slammed he's been in the UK for the cinnamon girl video and song (despite the video not being played) and i just think this is really interesting cos he's not even doing interviews about it.

its just a shame he doesnt have the commercial power he once had cos he could have used this package to really make a message, i think the single as a whole is one of the best "packages" ive ever come across, and its only £2 too! but its not been promoted once, not even out in the US so sadly it seems to be going unnoticed, leading to people saying "hes boring" when in reality you have to look a little further than the surface, cos he doesnt tell you where to look himself!

i mean, you could even look at US of D and see that a month later or something he's releasing Glass Cutter online! thats variety and i suppose if you don't like the music it doesnt make a difference but i'd say personal tastes aside this is very interesting. and he's won an award for use of technology on his website, a website he's been planning and pushing for years without much success, lots of problems and complaints with the first couple of years, now he's cracked it it seems and who else is out there doing this? people might put their album up for itunes, but prince is doing it all himself, and he got 6 figures of downloads in the first few weeks.
