When did Prince start playing the Hohner?

I was just checking out a photo series that Housequake had recently posted from Prince's first ever tour, ('The Rick James Tour' from '79 through to '80).

They show him clearly playing a Fender Tele:

When did the guy split from Fender, and why? confuse
jerkoff.....drool BULLSEYE! cool

lol now i wish i still had a computer, so i could crop his face and make that into a new avatar...

o-tay, as for why he got the hohner it was for 2 reasons:

1) it matched his stage attire of the time (zebra drawerz n'such)

2) he liked the sound of it...the raggediness of it appealed to 'im somewhat.

i still find it cool that he still rox that geetar to this day. nod

Yeah I noticed the new strat he was playin...love it! As for hohner/fender issue, the only difference I can think of is that the Hohner is ALL maple rather than just maple neck which I'm sure adds to the sound...but in what way, my ears are too spazzed to know shrug

Yeah 'clapz his funk face is great there...but check out Andre - the guys asleep! And Dez looks more like he's just sipped a nice warm cup of tea than busted the funkiest syncopated fifth on the planet eek

i feel for you
sexy dancer
just as long as we're together
iwbyl

..."head" made an odd appearance or two durin the last bit of the tour, but other than that, if my memory serves me right (i haven't been readin the vault lately...i'm a bad prince geek boxed) that's basically how it was.

I would only switch the importance of #1 and 2 around. The Hohner has a dirtier, more raw, crunchy sound to it versus the Tele. I have a Tele and a knock-off and there is an obvious difference in the "crunch" tone.

{Geeky-side showing alert....}

If that was Bambi they were playing, the positions of their hands on the neck don't match what's in the song, unless they were in the solo part. This could explain the 'dirty drawz' look on P's face. It's Dez's and Andre's that throws it off and make it it seem like they're playing "When We're Dancing Close and Slow". biggrin
