genderfucker Now that I've got your attention...
A friend sent this definition to me, so i have no idea where it came from: genderfuck n. (also v.) 1. Deliberately sending mixed messages about one's sex, usually through dress. (e.g., wearing a skirt with a beard.) This seems to fit P. pretty damn well, and a great way to answer the "Is he straight or gay?" (or male or female) question. Who agrees? Genderfucking is cool.
And it's not just done through dress, though that's the most visible way... The Normal Whores Club

For reasons known only to Prince, he's felt the need to tone it down a lot recently, but compared to the average guy he's still pretty girly. And that's awesome. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

But wouldn't the dress then cover the crucial areas? How can you do it "through" your dress? Oh, you don't mean... [Edited 10/30/04 4:35am]

a word used and applied by those who don't understand anything different than themselves. Boundaries are in the mind. You do as I say

What are you talking about? If I didn't understand things different from myself, I'd probably dismiss him as a "faggot" and wouldn't be here in the first place. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

It wasn't a personal dig at you, Meow85. It is a dig, moreseo, at the actual inventors of such ludicrous terminology. Please allow me to explain further. i personally just dont feel the need to call a man who wears make-up a 'gender fucker'. He is still a man, is'nt he? Is there a title which i can apply to a man who wears jeans and a t-shirt other than simply 'man'? I dont understand how by wearing make-up or dressing the way he does makes him anything other than who he is, a person, an individual. Gender roles are created by society. They are implanted in our minds as soon as we are born. For example, imagine buying clothes for a new born baby. Its blue for a boy and pink for a girl, right? Now, why is that? why cant a baby boy wear pink? Now imagine that you are gonna buy this child a toy. Whats it to be? a barbie for the girl and a G.I Joe for the boy? I wasnt having a personal dig at anybody. I just find it uneccessary for labels such as 'gender fucker' and 'meterosexual' to exist. In a roundabout way they aid in keeping gender role barriers exactly how they always have been instead of breaking them down. Anybody who wears make-up, be it man or woman, in my book are just themselves. I remember being at the ONA alone concert in manchester, England and one of the greatest things i heard prince say was this "We champion our diversty. We should celebrate our similarities". One nation under a groove. [Edited 11/1/04 8:57am] You do as I say

One nation under a groove. [Edited 11/1/04 8:57am] Unlike metrosexual, genderfucker probably wasn't invented by some fatass trying to make my money. I've only ever heard it used by "genderfuckers" themselves -not high-end makeup and fashion lines. I don't think labels should exist either, but as long as they do, there are going to be words for people who don't fit the gender molds society says they're supposed to. Keep in mind that in a lot of places (most places in the world, really) it's still considered shocking or weird if a guy wants to wear makeup. And lets not even get into the issue of trans people... But even in 2004, after 20+ years of being a famous figure, people still look at Prince in his makeup and girly clothes and go "What the fuck?!?!" "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

hcudcm is confusing terms a little. "Sex" is used to denote physical differentiation and is defined (mainly) by possession of male or female genitalia. "Gender" is used to refer to the cultural constructs "masculine" and "feminine" which are created with innumerable semiotic "signs" such as dress, language, behaviour etc.
Someone can mess with "gender" (the signs used regularly by the culture to differentiate between "masculine" and "feminine") without bringing into question their actual "sex" (male or female). I guess that's what would be referred to as "genderfucking". Whether or not you think it's good or bad that society uses these signs to differentiate gender, they do. But each society is different. For example, here in Tel-Aviv lots of young males wear make-up (usually lightly) so it's not really genderfucking. However, if they were to do the same in Jerusalem, 45 minutes drive from here, it WOULD be genderfucking because there make-up is generally used only by women. The point is that a male who uses feminine signs is no less male, and in fact one of the consequences and perhaps aims of genderfucking is to confuse those signs in the cultural discourse so that it becomes harder to define gender, and we become simply males and females (and transexuals!!!). I don't mind being called "genderfucker". Much rather that than goddamn "metrosexual" - that actually brings in my mind completely different connotations from the time I used to use the Tube each day to work... they had some "metrosexuals" there alright.

I'm not sure why u think that i am confusing 'sex' and 'gender' in my post. It seems like you are saying pretty much the same i did. Gender is a social construct. You are either this or that. Anything out of that mold, too, becomes labeled i.e Genderfucker. This serves as nothing more than to keep societal structures in place. Society as a whole won't fully accept a man in make-up. He cannot be labbeled a 'man', another term has to be plastered on him to seperate him from the norm. Lets call him a gender fucker in a bid to further highlight the definition of what constitutes a 'man' in the western world. Even the very name of it 'gender fucker', appears to suggest that they are doing something wrong. i.e they are messing with what is right. Prince, Davis Bowie, whoever, are just men regardless if they are wearing high heels, make-up, a dress, ass-less pants, if they sleep with men or women or both. the last thing the world needs is more labels. There is alot of great work by social psychologist Smail regarding this subject. highly recommended reading You do as I say

Gender is just a role people are expected to act out based on their physical makeup. You can either play the part or challenge it, nothing wrong with either.
