It's not that Prince is a control freak.... .....it's just that many of the folks he's worked with cannot compare to the genius of Prince. He's just amazing. Do you think anyone who has worked with him could match Prince's superstar status? (Maybe Sheila E. )
See, I was reading Alex Hahn's gar--er, I mean book today, and he was basically writing about how much of a control freak Prince was. For example, he wrote about how manipulative Prince was in the creative input of his boy, Andre. But does Andre have the genius of Prince? I don't know. But I guess we won't know due to that fact that Andre's best known for playing with Prince. But the truth is, he wasn't as talented as Prince. You don't have to agree with me. I'm not expecting you too anyway. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I think that's a symptom of being a control freak - with very few exceptions, he's worked with people who were not able to compete with him musically, and therefore could not challenge him.

part of it is that when you have a specific way you know something should be done in order for it to work, it's difficult to work with other people unless they "get it" as well...otherwise, it's like the old saying goes, "if you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself".
some personality types are team players and are good at sharing the pieces of the puzzle and can work in tandem to create the big picture. other people already HAVE the big picture in their minds, and have a hard time compromising with other people, especially when those other people don't have as good of as grasp on the task at hand. i can totally see prince as a big ol' micromanager and a control freak. too bad he didn't know when to give up on some of that control when he was doing shit like the graffiti bridge movie.

True dat. But at least he's got someone that liked the movie. But even if he wasn't such a control freak, and he did allow those in his royal kingdom to go venture off into their own projects, it still probably wouldn't match the genius. Prince is a tough act to follow to me. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I wouldn't say that Andre is as talented as Prince but I do think he is close. I've read for many years that Prince did not give Andre credit for a lot of the stuff he did.
Out of everyone Prince has ever worked with, Andre has always been my favorite. I would love to hear more from him. Andy is a four letter word.

A lot of talented, lesser-known/unknown cats could give Prince a run for his money. From what I hear from folks in the know, Andre is a baaaaad man.
A lot of times, fans take their loyalty or worship of Prince so far that he becomes a musical standard. He's an excellent artist -- no one's taking that away from him. But, understand that just because you haven't heard or seen an associate of Prince's do as much as him musically doesn't mean that they can't ... or don't. And, Prince's control-freak ways are well documented. Revisionism is such an ugly thing...
