Why do people hate on "1999: The New Master"? I just got it, it's so funky!! What the hell do you people think is wrong with it?

it is simply not the original, mr. squiggle.
hans also feels it should be packaged with moist towlettes.

I like the first track on the CD. It could have been better but it serves it's purpose of putting a little modern twist to the song so it will fit in well with a good mix on a modern dance floor.
I don't care for the other versions on the CD. They stray too far from the original. I like a remix to sound pretty much like the original but have a little something extra like an extended loop when the song breaks down with a little something extra mixed in...maybe the beat from another song mixed over the loop or a particular word of phrase mixed over both beats. I've heard DJ mixes of "1999" that are much better than Prince's "The New Master". Andy is a four letter word.

It might've been cool then, but it certainly ain't cool now. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

This just might be the worst thing in my collection even worse than NPS. but at least its a pretty purple colour.

"Why do people hate on "1999: The New Master"?"
Erm, to state the obvious - it's utter shit, in every possible way.

It was a halfhearted attempt to capitalize on the year. If Prince were serious about a comeback then, he would have went about it differently.

I've always said, as a song on it's own, it would have been okay, but in comparison to the great original, it falls flat. The original had a timeless, classic quality - the new version was very much anchored to that particular time in Prince's career, the dreaded NPS era, when his music didn't have a live, earthy feel to them, and especially with all the guests who were 'in' for that brief period only.
As well, the original had that massive epic 'wall of sound' feel to it, whereas the new one is made to feel like just some party song. It's hard to remake perfection. Prince would have been better off just improving the sound and mix.

it's diabolical.
i had nothing to do with the org when i bought it, and didn't know a single person who even liked prince's music past the sort of kiss / purple rain level, and so i had no idea what to expect. i can honestly say it's the worst piece of work by prince i've ever actually paid for*. * i stole Kama Sutra.

One time I saw this dog that could talk.
It told me the secret of life and we talked a little bit, shooting the breeze until the breeze fired back and we had to run. We scaled the trees as we went towards the highest hill we could find. We spoke of why the world wasn't as tuned in to their surroundings as we were, and how things could change. I told my talking dog friend (who I believe was named Rufus) about Prince. He asked if I had heard the New Master. I said I hadn't but asked him what he thought. He told me he loved it and then I woke up. I realized that I hit my head on the wall and dreamed the entire thing-why? Because even a dog would know that it's a piece of shit.

The only thing it's good for, is displaying as evidence when people want to compare:
01) The 80s and Lisa's contribution, 02) The 90s and Rosie Gaines' man-sized lungs.

i don't know if you're kidding or not, mrsquiggle, but i for one think the title track at least is a really good remake.
not a patch on the original, but there was some good work done to update it in my opinion. but then, i'm a cheesy bastard.

It's a great album destroyed by mammoth tracklengths dominated by synthy instrumentals. The New Master is considerably more fun to listen to. Keep Steppin and Deep House are basically entirely new tracks, all funky in their own.

because it makes the police's remake of "don't stand so close to me" sound like frikkin' brian wilson's "smile".

Actually the first track (1999-TNM) is crisper and muhc less boring than the original. HOWEVER, I could have done without the rap and the changed vocal tracks were distracting and almost embarrassing.
It's a track that, if you tweaked it a little, would have been great. But the additions sucked---except the spanish interlude, for some reason I dug that.

I'm talking in terms of albums... the song "1999" is of course perfection in it's original form, and the New Master is a funky lil remix of such. But of course it's not better than the original. But I definetely enjoy listening to the New Masters disc more than the 1999 LP.
