The original had a timeless, classic quality - the new version was very much anchored to that particular time in Prince's career, the dreaded NPS era, when his music didn't have a live, earthy feel to them, and especially with all the guests who were 'in' for that brief period only.
As well, the original had that massive epic 'wall of sound' feel to it, whereas the new one is made to feel like just some party song. It's hard to remake perfection. Prince would have been better off just improving the sound and mix. Exactly! Why mess with perfection?

U go Squig!!!
I think TNM is much over-dissed here! AB's got it down as usual, even tho there's no female genitalia on the disc!!! (altho it's not hard to be distracted imagining Rosario... Oh, sorry! ) "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

I'm talking in terms of albums... the song "1999" is of course perfection in it's original form, and the New Master is a funky lil remix of such. But of course it's not better than the original. But I definetely enjoy listening to the New Masters disc more than the 1999 LP. i maintain what i said. i was talking about the ALBUM, which is genius. the new master, while i agree it has more appeal that people give credit for is not a patch on the original ALBUM.

1. I haven't listened to it since 1999
2. Its size ruins the otherwise smooth look of my Prince collection (I take it back - that mini-CD of "Gett Off" from Japan sticks out, however, Batman in a can and the petri dish fit very nicely, thank you) 3. It's friggin' gold, yet sales went nowhere near that (I'm guessing, here. OK, I'm hoping, hoping that few other people were fooled into buying this) When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. Regardless of the day, I'm glad you were born.
