Prince and lip-synching...

As much as I am still rolling my ass off watching clips of the Ashlee Simpson debacle, isn't it ironic that people can't believe that her drummer screwed up and hit the wrong button?

After all, imagine how many times Prince would have been in deep doo doo had Morris Hayes "pressed the wrong button"! Yes, I don't think Prince ever fully lip-synched in any live performance (except a couple isolated ones where he apparently had no choice--VH1 P Control performance and the Dick Clark Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad performances come to mind), but, he sure used a hell of a lot of backing vox in many of his live tours and TV tapings!

Thank God Prince is now 100% live on his vocals (I think?) and the "memorex" aspect of much of his mid- and late-90s touring has been removed.

CynicKill

This was Prince's go-with-the-flow period. I was shocked when I saw him on the WMA. Bad bad show, and Prince is AWFUL at lypsincing. I think he knows that.

I think what happened was, as the band began to play a song, the vocal track that began was of another song. It may have been to the song they previously performed. All she could do is just stand there 'embarrassed' and then walk off stage.

If you're talking about Prince's lip-syncing (sp?) from (for example) the World Music Awards in '95 or the American Music Awards from the same year, you're talking about a pretty different thing from what Ashlee and her like try to pull. In all of those instances, Prince doesn't even have a microphone. There's no pretense involved, he's simply not singing - it's out in the open.

And as for using a lot of backing tracks etc. with Mr. Hayes in that era NPG, again I think that's a totally different thing. So if Mr. Hayes had come in early on a "HOLD ON TO YER WIGS!" or a "BONE!!!" or whatever, it wouldn't have been anything like what happened with Jessica. He wasn't using actual full-on vocal tracks that were singing the lead vocal so that he didn't really have to sing it. He'd have backing tracks and stuff like that, harmonies and shit, but that's all him singing, and again there's no pretense. Obviously he's not singing all of the harmonies and everything himself all at the same time.

I just see it as a totally different thing. The only time I can really think of where it was even close to being equivalent would be say on Solid Gold with 1999.

its still lip synching though...like on the ama's...true he don't got a mike BUT he's moving his lips which gives the illusion that he IS singing...say if ur like in the middle of the audience...u don't c no mike but u see lips moving ur gonna think o well he got on one of those head mics cuz his lips r moving...so i feel like if u r gonna lipsynch don't do it @ all..just let the track play and dance or whatever.

Oh come on? Next thing is you wanting the video's to be sang live as well? He's one of the greatest live performers. You can count the LS on one hand, and you be buggin' about it? Me don't understand. shake

Agreed, David. And like I said, I hardly think him not being mic'd AT ALL, and in fact chomping on a big wad of gum in more than one instance is comparable to an Ashlee or a a Britney.

Hey, it still wasn't a real popular choice with me at the time, but at least in the Gold era performances we're talking about, I think he was doing it as much to "protest" Warners as anything else.

ok people.....her drummer hit the wrong track thingy and it went to pieces of me instead of one of her other songs and she stood there and so she redeemed herself at the RMA's earlier this week

well no c i get y videos aren't done live..there not SUPPOSED to be..but concert performances are...it doesn't matter if he's one of the greatest live performers or if u can count it on one hand...he still did it..just cuz he's PRINCE don't mean he can cheat and get away with it.

...I think she tried to cover it with a stupid dance before walking off the stage, from what I saw.

I have a video (file) where he's lipsynching
"The greatest romance ever sold" , along with a horn section
and Larry Graham pretending to play live

I also have another video (file) where he's playing
"Emancipation" with a huge band (including Rhonda) on bass and dancers ,
for a huge audience
It seems he's lypsynching in some parts , but i'm not sure
He sometimes sounds like Camille !
At the end , tho' he plays bass live (only for a few seconds)
There's a camera shot of Paul Young in the audience
