Now, now.
To those who know what I was talking about and responded with good examples, thank you! I do admire Prince for his musicianship. That's the one thing no one can take away from him, even those who do not like his music still have to hand it to him on that level. And although the inability to play in different time signatures does not necessarily mean you have no talent, it was hard for me to believe that someone with his gifts wouldn't have ventured outside of a standard beat structure at all. It's just that every song that came to mind fit that mold and I didn't have the brain power or the time to research it. To those of you who didn't understand what I was talking about, thanks for tryin' to help a sistah out. To those of you who made disparaging remarks about the lack of knowledge of others, try to remember that basic musical knowledge isn't afforded to everyone like it should be. Music programs have been the first to go in many schools and it's sad how many people have never had any instruction in music whatsoever. If you enjoyed this question, please stay tuned for my next post. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

UH,,,,,i think people are responding to something they are not sure about. Some of the songs listed above are in standard 4/4.
including Under the cherry moon it's gonna be a beautiful Night. And what's with these 6/8s? Question of U 6/8? 12/8???? It's 4/4. Power fantasic. 4/4 Under The Cherry Moon 6/8 no 4/4 International Lover 6/8 no Insatiable 6/8 no 4/4 The Question of U 12/8 no 4/4 Damn U 12/8 no 4/4 Solo Free (true) Condition of the Heart Free no 4/4 3 Chains O Gold Occasional 2/4 bar (otherwise 4/4) (this is correct) Diamonds and Pearls Occasional 2/4 bar (This is also correct) (otherwise 4/4) I've never heard and don't have the sheet music to a Place in Heavan or She loves me for me. i'm not knocking anyone nor am i saying that I'm a music master, but I do have the official sheet music for most of those songs and more,,,(Not music books) and ALL of those mentioned above are in in 4/4 I'm not even sure he has any songs in 3/4. I'll check when i go home. During Live performances the band jumps into 3/4 all the time. But for some reason Prince rarely records in anything other than 4/4

I beg to differ. including
Under the cherry moon it's gonna be a beautiful Night. UTCM is 6/8. fact 'It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night' 4/4 correct And what's with these 6/8s? Question of U 6/8? 12/8???? It's 4/4. Power fantasic. 4/4 Question Of U - 12/8. fact Power fantastic - 3/4. fact Under The Cherry Moon 6/8 no 4/4
Insatiable 6/8 no 4/4 The Question of U 12/8 no 4/4 Damn U 12/8 no 4/4 Sorry. You Are incorrect. None of these selections are in Standard time (4/4). They are all examples of triple time. This is what helps in providing their 'blues' feel. UTCM - 6/8 Insaitiable 6/8 The Question Of You 12/8 Damn U 12/8 Diamonds and Pearls Occasional 2/4 bar (This is also correct)
(otherwise 4/4) Partially incorrect. The main body of this song is in standard time (4/4). However it also demonstrates changes in time signiture - including 3/4, 2/4 and also 5/4 EXAMPLES. 3/4 - This is demonstrated for one bar just after rosie sings the line "O to the N to D to the perals of love. After this the Orchestra plays a quick run of semiquavers. This is a bar of 3/4 2/4 - this time signiture can be heard as prince sings "Off-er You" 5/4 - this single bar of 5/4 is demonstrated just after prince sings "offer u my" (seen above). Now when he sings "Love" to finish that particular sentence - that is a bar of 5/4 You're welome [Edited 10/25/04 14:40pm] You do as I say
