Snap

I place Musicology right next to Rave -- same thing... a few pretty good songs, but not much else to see here.

I really love this album. My boyfriend which isn't a hardcore Prince fan likes it too but hates older songs like Darling Nicky... We all have different opinions.

The excellent reviews for Musicology continue to puzzle me, its a weak album,
probably one of the 3 weakest non-instrumental albums he's made , and this is from someone whose a big fan of his 80s AND 90s work . Theres not 1 standout
track on there still , the best track on Musicology is good and nothing better ,
certain tracks like A Million Days , On The Couch and Life Of The Party are just depressingly uneventful .Must do better next time Prince. neutral

Well I say just be happy he's releasing music and touring.

First off - yeah I'm an idiot, I spelled musicOlogy wrong.

Some of you got me wrong. I don't want the Prince of Purple Rain or yesteryore. I want the Prince who had the balls to put out whatever the fuck he wanted - like The Rainbow Children, a mere 3 years ago. If I want a good pop album, Prince lite, 80's throwback, whatever, you know what? I'll listen to Outkast.

I think Prince is always capable of pushing the musical envelope but that he gets distracted by tours, chart action, NPG merchandise, etc. Why is he trying to get todays listeners on the bandwagon by giving them what they want (Kiss, 1999, Let's Go Crazy) when he should be trying to win them over with provocative music. I hate to say it but that's what an artist should do.

By way of album rating, here's where I'm coming from:

Musicology - 5
The Rainbow Children - 10
Rave - 6
Crystal Ball - 8
The truth - 9
NPS - 5
Chaos and Disorder - 9
Emancipation - 8
Gold Experience - 10
Come - 7
Symbol - 6
Diamonds and Pearls - 6
Graffiti Bridge - 10
Batman - 10
Lovesexy - 10
SOTT - 10
Parade - 10
ATWIAD - 10
Purple Rain - 0 (just kidding - 10)
1999 - 9
Controversy - 9
Dirty Mind - 8
Prince - 7
For You - 6

Musicology lacks substance in a lot of tracks, except on some cuts like Call My Name. Overall it's enjoyable and not without it's moments, but it could've been better.

totally agree, no clothes at all.
sounds like an overall tower of power album to me. (thanx 2 candy)
like they said they've got soul with a capital S. same with the musicology album, while the prince albums back in the 80's, as well as gold nigga, gold and the rainbow children are SOUL albums. mind you, that's 3 more capitals there.

....oh, and just a few weeks back i saw one of his last performances.....
the song 'god' in an instrumental saxophone version.... kenny g alert!!!!!
what if eric leeds had done that in the purple rain tour, he probably would've been shot!
almost started to wonder if that's the REAL prince, or is there a lookalike?!
nothing wrong at all with trying new things, but that was horrible!!!

Yeah, right. rolleyes Prince could have played patty cake with a monkey onstage during the Purple Rain tour and crowds would have eaten it up.

Yes. You missed one that I hope you indeed have: Vault, Old Friends For Sale. Great album with excellent production qualities. All of the songs work great as an album, but were culled from the orphan bins. 8 out of 10 in my book.

Oh, and I agree with you about Musicology. It's lame, tame and a crying shame.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Musicology2004

ok im gonna put my life on the line lol and say that i think Musicology is a fantastic album. I cant get enough of the songs Illusion Coma, Call My Name, Cinnamon Girl Reflection, and especially Dear Mr. Man. Along with the rainbow children and Emancipation, i think it is my favorite album of post Warner Brothers Prince. He really sounds like hes got his game together on this album. However no album is perfect. A Million days, Life O' the Party, and What Do you want me to do i think lack substance. O and especially on the couch. The only two i probobly skip when im listening to it would be On the Couch and What Do U Want Me 2 Do. What i think happens is people that have been prince fans for years and years and years, want him to play in a certain style he did at one time. Some want more TRC others Purple Rain, or SOTT. I'm only 16 and Prince fans are hard to come by my age. But i like all his music surprisingly. Aside from NPS i listen to it all. If i want old school i stick in some Dirty Mind or Controversy. If im in a jazz/fusion type mood i stick in TRC or Xpectation. Or if i need my share of hip hop or rap i got Rave or Emancipation to listen to. It all depends on my mood. So in a way im glad that prince's music is so diverse and im glad hes put out Musicology. Besides SOTT and boots i have its the album i play the most. wink

So I'm listening to the Purple Rain live video yesterday and I was digging this whole part in the middle where Prince is just standing in front of a dark blue light. You only see his silhouette and here these doves and snare drum and synthesizer and it goes on for 5 minutes. Very cool. And I remember the Purple Rain show I went to in SF where the lights went out, he played 17 days in the dark behind the curtain and then the lights went back on and the show didn't start for another 20 minutes. Then after the last encore, with the lights on and the arena half empty, he comes back out and plays America with all the lights still on. Damn!

My point is that from the day I first got into Prince I've looked to him to give me the unexpected. Remember when each album sounded TOTALLY different from the one before? I remember picking the needle up off the record and putting it back on Housequake after the first listen. No way!

I'm still a faithful fan. The Rainbow Children blew me away. But then came Musiclogy - Prince lite for the masses. It's not a bad album. But it certainly is not a return to form (as many have said) of the Prince that I know is somewhere out there. The "Professor" attitude he's taken up is kinda boring.

"Don't you miss the feeling Prince gave you, back in the day." Am I the only one who sees Musiclogy as the emperor with no clothes?

I agree with a lot of what you are saying here sigh.
