Guitar Effects Used on Last December

Hi,

When Prince plays the 3 chords at the beginning of "Last December", what effects is he using?

Its no flange but it deffinatly is chorus. Its a Gibson jumbo guitar on that particular part which is what gives it that beautiful warm tone.

PS. Fonkay, the chords are E (with a G# in the bass), A, B & Bmaj7 wink

If you don't mind here's the first:

Are the chords to "Bambi" c#5, d#5, e5 and the low e5?
Do you know some chords for "She loves me 4 me"?

Thanks!

and a non-technical question:

which is your favorite Prince chord-progression?

Whoa questions eek.

I study a music degree at college & specialise in music technology & theory. I do this stuff for real every day for my project & always have to bear in mind how to achieve the sounds I want.

As for the bambi chords, I dont actually own a copy of it yet but I have a version downloading from http://www.winmx.com . As soon as its done I'll figure it out for u.

As for chord progressions, I like a the flavours prince has to offer. It depends on my mood really as to which one I feel more.

Thanx

God bless

That's a cool effect on the Last December intro.
Sounds like flange to me, but must be something else there too to give that fuller effect, like chorus.
Thanks cloud9mission for the chords.
Could you also post chords in the change, too, six I believe?
Thanks in advance.

Yes & I believe he preferes Messa Boogie. They asked what effects were used but if I were to go into detail, I'd mention the amp. It dont hav much reverb on it towards the begining though as he clicks that on for the second verse.

Cool

Go into detail? Well, excuse me but the tone is in the amp, NOT in the damn effects! I doubt that's a Mesa (ever heard one?) it sounds more like a modern tube amp - could be Hughes & Kettner or something else he is favouring these days. Anybody who owns tube gear knows what they sound like. Different! The FX in that piece are probably just something added later on at ProTools, typical plug-in stuff. btw... Delay, Flanger and Chorus are in essence the same effect so sometimes it can be hard to tell what it is in question exactly. But if we're talkin' about "Last December" then the character of the opening part is definitely in the amp (it's actually in the PREAMP, but that's for us preamp freaks)

Well, there is reverb within the whole mix. I am yet to hear a single musical recording that doesn't have digital (or natural) reverb to it. It's just customary, but I guess you knew that. smile

Anyway, thanks for sharing your insight and opinions. I'll check your stuff later if it's available on the web.
