Who remembers the MTV contest ... to premier UTCM and that chick from Sheridan Wyoming won and got to go on a date with Prince ? She pissed me off so bad because she did not look happy enough. She looked nervous as hell, so maybe that was the problem, but I just kept thinking how much happier I would've been and would've showed it.
On second thought, I think I would've showed it TOO much and probably would've scared the little guy. That's why "people like me don't really win on MTV."

Yeah I remember that chick winning the MTV contest. What made me mad about that story was the girl bitching after the date that Prince took her pearls and did not return them. WTF, if Prince were to take my pearls, shoot, I'd gladly let him. Maybe he wanted something to remember the date by, either way, she kinda made a big deal out of it when she shouldn't have. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Yep, I remember both the contest and the winner (Lisa Barber).
Besides clearly being nervous, she did NOT look the "type" to be hanging around with Prince and I think she knew it and felt really out of place. But talk about being out of place -- Prince and the Revolution hanging out in Sheridan, WY? Lisa also had terrible posture. My friends and I used to joke around about her for a long time and used to make our one friend do her 'Lisa Barber imitation' all the time because it was so funny. My friend could do that Lisa-Barber-head hanging down-slouchy posture-dopey expression thing exactly like Lisa. (We were kinda catty and mean back then. ) Here's a link to an interesting article about all that Prince/Sheridan,WY/Lisa Barber hoopla: http://princetext.tripod...._1986.html

An excerpt from the link that SnowQueen posted above: First you win a contest, then you win friends. That's how it happened for Lisa Barber, 20, a Sheridan, Wyo. motel chambermaid who last month dialed an MTV contest number and, by being the 10,000th caller, won a date with Prince and the opportunity to have his much-hyped new movie, Under the Cherry Moon, premiered in her hometown. Barber, a veteran contest entrant who had never won more than "a couple of Big Macs and a curling iron," was ecstatic. So were her friends, many of whom she had never met. Moments after her name was announced, callers from California to the Carolinas began ringing up to ask for one or two or 10 of the 200 tickets she'd been allotted for Prince's frontier fandango. Her mother, Elena Holwegner, fielded the endless requests with humor, if not compromise. Ring! "No, Lisa's not here," she fibbed to one caller. "You say you're calling from Maine? Sorry." Ring! "You say you want to come over and take pictures of me doing housework? I've got a better idea. You come over and do housework, and I'll take pictures of you." Ring! "Sorry, no more tickets. What? You say you have six days to live? Well, sorry to break the news, honey, but you'll be long gone before Prince gets here. What? You say you can hold on an extra day? Well, I can't. Sorry!" Click. Lisa's mom didn't take any bullshit from anybody, she knew how to get rid of people calling who wanted tickets. [Edited 10/16/04 15:56pm] RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

She was probably just mad that she had to shell out another $1.50 (with tax!) at KMart for a replacement strand!

roflmao! She probably was. It's funny that you said Kmart, because a friend and I were talking about this story once. I made the comment that Lisa probably bought those pearls at Kmart, so why should she be upset, when she got them at a discounted price anyway. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I didn't feel like she was a big fan of Prince, either. I think she just happened to have time that night to dial a thousand times. (Some of us were out getting our groove on.) I am sure that if she was a huge fan they would have done a short film on all of her memorabilia (like most of us have) but they didn't.
And that really blows. 18 years later and I still think we were robbed!

That's pretty much what myself and my friends used to say, too, about those pearls. I wonder of Lisa is still a Prince fan and posts here?

I remember my friends and I making that same observation back in the day. She just didn't seem very excited or into it all. But, to be fair, she was probably really really overwhelmed by everything and didn't seem like the extroverted type anyway. She seemed quite shy. Such an experience was very foreign to her and maybe she just didn't know how to react. I tend to be like that sometimes so - despite my kidding around about her - I give her level of fandom the benefit of the doubt. How your devotion is displayed isn't always an accurate indication of its depth.

But really, back in the 80s everybody wore those long, cheapo strands of fake $2 pearls. I know me and my friends did! I swear I had more cheapass fake junk jewelry back then... lol

It didn't flatter her at all nor fit in with the tone of the occasion. I would've told them 'no thanks' and come up with my own outfit!

I thought she was gonna have at least some lace or feathers on or something. She looked like Aaron Neville's date, not Prince's. Oh yeah, and wasn't Martha Quinn so excited to be there ?!?! I always appreciated her enthusiasm during that whole thing. She loved Prince.

I loved when she asked Prince "How do you feel, Prince?" (about being there, the premiere in general, etc) and he said "With my hands, Martha." Ah the good ol days... :misty eyed:

yeah, and then she gets to introduce the band!! and she's like... uhhh duuuuhh.. oh man, anyone of us would have been like: "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

The tapes I had from years ago got ruined a long time ago. It's been a long, long time since I've seen that UTCM premiere show so I feel a little at a loss here to contribute specifics to this thread, but I'm loving these memory jogs that you're posting! And I do vaguely remember Jerome's cringeworthy attempts to interview drunk chicks. hahaha

(I guess the rest of the Orgers had something to do on a Saturday night. It's dead around here!) I loved the performance at the end of the night. It was the first time I had ever seen him in a traditional suit. He was doing these gestures while the band played and at one point he was pretending to be brushing his teeth. It was so cute.
