I recently ranked all of Prince's albums, and Rave came in at 9th place out of 26...pretty high. I still love this record. Of course, it is a matter of taste, but I'll take the title track any day over "Kiss". I also believe that TGRES, Hot Wit U, Tangerine, The Sun, the Moon and Stars, I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore and Strange But True are very worthy additions to his massive collection of great songs. The only song that I skip is "Silly Game"- I agree with your comments there! But just as you are entitled to your opinions (which you elaborate and express very clearly and descriptively- you are indeed a good writer), I am entitled to like it! I guess your "Temptation" is my "Rave", that's all!

Again, out of curiousity, which of Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Parade, SOTT, Lovesexy, TBA, TGE, the Truth, TRC did you put behind Rave?

Personally, I don't see how Rave could be considered one of his top ten... but that's just me I guess.

Personally, I believe 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic' is a great song. I'm sure that most listeners really objected to the admittedly plastic production, "dated" as it is, and not the song itself. (releasing it virtually unchanged was a bold if foolhardy move, but then again, that's Prince for you...) The vocals are impassioned and feverish. Also, listen to the live version of that track on the'Small Club' CD and you'll see that the vibe was incandescent... I mean, that song was on fire!... and it inspired that terrific guitar solo...

I'll give you the whole list if you like hehe

1. (tie) Lovesexy and 1999
3. Sign o' the Times
4. Crystal Ball
5. The Gold Experience
6. Symbol
7. Parade
8. Purple Rain
9. Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic
10. Controversy
11. The Rainbow Children
12. Dirty Mind
13. Graffiti Bridge
14. Batman
15. Emancipation
16. The Vault
17. Around the World in a Day
18. Come
19. Prince
20. Diamonds and Pearls
21. Chaos and Disorder
22. The Truth
23. For You
24. The Black Album
25. Kamasutra
26. New Power Soul

Of course, each of the top 20 here made my top 100 albums, so placing Come at 18 is only reflective of putting Prince against himself.

I definitely agree! That live version that is 15 minutes is simply breathtaking.

That is exactly the problem with that version on the cd... it's not that raw sped up rock funking psycadelicly -playing the guitar Prince we are hearing on the album....Nooooo we are hearing the over produced clinical sounding "hip" hop r&b beats using KAJ depending prince on a slowed down clinical out of place and uninspired sounding sounding Rave there! lol

to tell "the truth'...

Whatever, I like the music on this CD.

AND the song 'Rave Un2 the joy fantastic' is a classic to me. One of my favorites, love the guitar, love his voice, love it all.

I am reminded of the occasion when Sheila E was quoted as saying: "Prince doesn't care how a song is recorded. It's how it comes from here (pointing at her heart) that counts".

That idiosyncratic approach of Prince's might go some way towards explaining the song 'Rave' production debacle.

I don't think this is a terrible album, I like the title track and I really like Man o War and I love you but don't trust you anymore. There is a couple I don't care for but all and all it's not a bad Cd.
