Favorite Prince "Diss", live or otherwise.

Prince can be pretty sharp-tongued a quick to cut at times. He won't hesitate too let one of his band members know they screwed up or even rib a fan or colleague. More often than not it's pretty funny. Here are some of my favorites:

To Sheila E and Cat, 1988, europe rehearsal show during Still would stand all time.
"Who's the fool singin WILL? It's WOULD!"

To a fan in Atlanta who claimed to be a musician because he "sampled".
"What'cha play?....what, you sample? **Heh, he say he samples!** That's like playing bingo brotha, I said do you Play?!!"

Taking a jab at the Time during Rave Unto the Year 2000
"...The Time was just on, they it's 1984 up in here!"

My all time favorite:
Directed at Paul Peterson, 1986 Rehearsal at First Ave. Shortly after Paul Peterson had decided to leave The Family. Rumor has it that Paul was in the house. Prince and the band kicked in with "Mutiny", complete with a "Paul! Punk of the Month!" chant! Prince also chimed in with lines like;

"Paul Peterson, are you out there? did you give? You took! did you give?"

" If my boy's out there, he's leavin now! Lookin for them car keys.."

Anyone else have any favorite Prince Disses?
"We can play 4 days! If it get dry, gimme that mayonaise!"

Whos the fool singin will its would. that was actually bonnie boyer singing will.

i heard that when malcom jamal warner was rapping at his aftershow at the metro chicago, he was laughing his ass off. thats pretty funny.

i love the looks he gives to the audience members that get up to dance. he disses them, but in a light hearted way.

the time also dishes it out. at a time show once, my gfriend at the time was wearing this real tight real short skirt with her real thick legs (i'm into thick). she was brought up onstage and jerome kept tugging at her skirt. as if to imply that her skirt was way too short. at the same show, they brought up a prince look alike. they had alot of fun with him. they said they thought it was him but it couldn't be he's too tall. this same guy is brought up onstage alot for prince shows. prince calls him his cousin.

finally i love the story about divinity. poor girl sewed her purple outfit for nothin.

If you've heard a tape of this show, you will definitely understand why he was laughing smile

I always thought it was Sheila. Thanks for the correction. he was always getting on Bonnie for one reason or another.

That's pretty funny about the Time. The Time and Prince have always taken stabs at eachother, and it's always pretty funny.

I remeber when Prince debut "Christopher Tracy's Parade" at First Ave. He through out a little warning:
"Jimmy Jam, I don't wanna hear this on no record!"
"We can play 4 days! If it get dry, gimme that mayonaise!"

At the Celebration last year, during Maceo's extended version of whatever i.e. about 4.30 am, we were sitting at the side chilling (ok almost sleeping) when Prince made his way towards the stage. He did this several times, occasionally wondering when Maceo was going to call it a night. During this time there was this guy dancing ....er 'freestyle' - not bad - but he was using every inch of the 20 square feet he had marked out for his private use. Prince stops right in front of us, looks at this guy rather warily, and considers his next move. The guy was oblivious to the audience. Then Prince turns to us, looks back at the guy, and then and gives us a that look. No words required.

"Who's is this?" (in reference to a CD left onstage), followed by "come and get it."

just kidding...

That's one of the reasons why I'm happy to see the show and dance by my seat. I don't want to go onstage and have Prince making funny faces and dissing.

Would it have made a difference if Alicia Keys brought it to him in a cat suit?

How about the faces he makes at Madonna's musical choices during the preview to Love 4 one another special on VH-1.
He gave her music the "stank-face", or, as Brian Fellows would say, "da debil eyes".???

Also, love his dissing of MJ on 'My Name Is Prince'
U must become a Prince before u're king anyways
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

My top 2 are:

on BET Tavis Smily interview.. when Prince was talking about "Sampling".. just his facial expressions.. and he says" I can't make a educated statement of sampling.. I guess because I play".. also when he looks in the camera and says "My mic is on"

the second is on the Rave dvd.. when he says in the interview section: "everyone is talking about the best ever.. everyone is excepting awards,ect.. Well why don't we just get on stage"..

Another one that was pretty funny was during an interview with Kris Rock. They were discussing Michael Jackson, and how MJ wanted Prince to play the part of the Gang leader in the video for "Bad", the same part that Wesley Snipes played.

Prince:"Have you ever noticed the opening line to that song? It goes "Yo butt is mine....". Now, I don't who was supposed to say that to who, but uh , he sure wasn't going to be saying that to me!"
"We can play 4 days! If it get dry, gimme that mayonaise!"

I saw that as well. I don't think he was directly dissing Mariah though. He basical used her as an example, since she supposedly has a "good" contract in which she gets a hefty percentage of her per record sales, compared to the pawltry sums that most other artist get. Once he broke down the figures and how all the money is allocated, he showed how Mariah"s "good deal", wasn't very good at all. Thus ending it with "Mariah got screwed".

He should have dissed her for that hack job she and Sisqo did to "The Beautiful Ones"!

One time at Paisley Park about 95, about halfway through the third song, Tommy Barbarella comes running on stage, throws his jacket off and starts playing. Prince looked so pissed that he was late. Right then, he had the band break it down and had everyone take a solo except Tommy, and P didn't look at him the rest of the night! Damn.

My favorite Prince dissin' story has to be the diss he threw at Quincy Jones. I forget which awards show it was, but at the end, everyone came out on stage to sing a "rousing" version of "We Are The World". Prince, who had not participated in the original session, did come out on stage and stood in the front row with a lollipop firmly planted in his mouth, not singing a word.

Quincy was standing beside him shooting dirty looks his way and, finally fed up with Prince's refusal to sing, stuck his microphone in front of Prince's face.

Undaunted and without missing a beat, Prince popped his sucker out of his mouth and held it up to Quincy.

The perfect diss without saying a word!

My husband doesn't believe me on this one, so if anyone has it on tape, drop me a line, would ya?
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

HalluRain I remember that lollipop episode. Is that what that was all about? I dont remember them singing We Are The World tho, I thought they were singing something else.

I wonder what P really thinks of Q on the serious tip.

On to the Small Club stuff. I heard that boot too. The way it was going I def hear more than one voice that needed to be corrected, it sounded like it was BOni and Sheila and whoever else was singing with him that got 'will' confused with 'would'.

It def did not sound like it was just one female voice making that mistake, maybe cuz they were all tired and kinda forgot or were just learning it themselves. Who knows?

Yeah Prince def has a lil sharp mouth on him no doubt. I talked about this with some friends of mine a couple of yrs ago, and we were saying, and this was before we even hrd of the boots out here of his rehearsals, that when u r practising on stage and someone is just not geting it right, over and over again, all that 'quiet shy bashful type' image that Prince put out here about himself must go out the window quick!!!

On one boot rehearsal I hrd, Prince says, "Put the mf(he used the real word) magazine down and get this right!" I couldnt beleive that!

But really all of this is not new if u have been into him from the start listening to the earliest of boots, that personality trait has always been there I think, which in a weird way shows that Prince is as real as anybody else aside from all the imaging he has done over the years.

I heard some rehearsal stuff from Nat King Cole and Miles too and both of then could get kinda testy too during some recording sessions and what could come off as 'smart assed' as well! lol. But when it's time to do it, they r on it!

peace!

I've just been reading AtlantaHatGuy's concert report and here's the latest "diss" to come from the mouth of Prince.

"Prince continued to pick on local celebrity Usher, saying that Usher was in the passenger seat of the ride that got smashed, but it was ok, because Prince would write Usher a song, and the royalties he would get from it would pay for the car. He also joked that his girl’s sweater was on inside out, implying that Usher got some play….some guy in the audience kept repeating what Prince was saying, and at one point, Prince looked out at him and said, “THE --- TAG --- WAS --- ON --- THE --- OUTSIDE.” I think the guy took the hint and shut up."

That just cracked me up!

biggrin
Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.
