The Cheesy Heart of Graffiti Bridge (the movie)

Ever since I purchased the three Prince movies on DVD, I've found a new love for Graffiti Bridge.

Things I have noticed since buying the DVD:

* Aura is ACTUALLY an angel. I never realised that before, because I had only watched the VHS version ONCE and this fact kind of went over my head because of the apparent terribleness of the overall movie. Upon discovering this, I have discovered a layer of actual DEPTH to the script I hadn't noticed before. Is this common knowledge, because I've never seen it mentioned before. I thought she was just a wishy washy "artiste" type of character who WANTED to be an angel. But now I realise she ACTUALLY IS AN ANGEL. Wow. It gives the movie a whole new meaning to me. She's also actually the MAIN character because of this fact who tries to save the souls of the two warring musicians. The movie actually has a POINT, thank god.

* In "Elephants and Flowers" a DJ does a little "scratch" on his turntable and Prince gives the CHEESIEST look I have EVER seen as if to say, "Look, I'm cool now - I've got HIP-HOP in my music! Aren't I fabulous!". Which leads me to believe, noticing this among others things that...

* This movie is actually a BLACK COMEDY! The humour is that everyone involved except Prince and perhaps Tevin, Mavis and Jill Jones (she's beautiful, but a terrible actress) knows that the movie is SHIT, during filming. Which lends the movie the following quality:

* This movie is a cult movie in the sense that Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is cult movie and is actually a comedy for being so FUCKING bad. Also:

* Graffiti Bridge has a lot of heart, albeit very cheesy heart. All of the above points have left me with a new appreciation for the fact that it DOES actually have some SUBSTANCE, albeit very cheesy substance.

Anyway, this thread is for those who appreciate this movie for its "cheesy heart". Has anyone else noticed any of these points or were they blaringly obvious to begin with?

Have you heard the audio commentary on the Showgirls special edition? Graffiti Bridge SO would benefit from a similar one.

The guy who gives the audio commentary purports that it is, in fact, the greatest movie of American cinema, based on the fact that at every moment in the film, everyone involved, from the actors, director and everything, everyone involved makes the wrong decision.

The audio commentary flirts between genuine love of the movie, OTT fauning of the main characters and their situations, and acerbic truths.

It's pure genious, and I never watch the movie any other way!

Graffiti Bridge would shine like a beacon with similar treatment.

exactly! sounds brilliant. but prince would never have it as he is not in on the joke. warner bros however could do this. hmmm maybe we should make a petition to have this kind of treatment put to a "special edition" of the movie?

glad to see someone understands exactly where i'm coming from.

I can't speak for everyone, but on November 2, 1990, I did notice in the theaters that "Aura" was supposed to be an angel.

Prince says at the beginning: "Are there really angels, or are they just in our minds? It all comes out in the wash, in time."

Alas, this did not help the story in any way shape or form. GB still sucked.
Tell me, do you bleed? You will!

From the very first time I saw GB, I knew that Aura was an angel.
I thought it was pretty obvious, but a bunch of my friends didn't realize either that she was an angel until they saw the DVD.

It sure is obvious, not that it matters much.....she says to Jerome in a rather serious moment that "I know their is good in Morris" and tells Jerome that she will make them both stop fighting or something like that, and she'll do whatever it takes (i.e get hit by a truck!).....this don't make her an angel, but Jeromes face when she tells him this, is actually good acting as he looks at her seriously.....good acting Jerome!!!

She also appears by a feather I think (Tevin sees this).....the bit where Jesse Johnson and Monty Moir (I think) of the Time go and seee Mavis for the take over o her club is quite amusing...Jesse sarcastically says to Mavis "ain't that a shame!".....funny stuff their by Jesse!

Another useless plot hole:- Some random bloke steals the deed off George Clinton at the end! Who the fuck is he? They even help him after the crash I think?

Some moments in the movie do look beutiful though and I love the lighting and general atmosphere of this movie.....alot better then "purple rain"!

Plus what the fuck r Levi, Miko and TC Ellis wearing? Great stuff! The TC running joke was well executed but I imagine in the original cut, he was in more scenes as TC happens to be in 2 places at once in one scene if I rememeber.....

First of all, it was obvious that Aura was an Angel. In one scene she just dissapears and re-appears in a different outfit! I don't know about you, but I've never been able to do that!
