I just heard TRC. My review for whoever cares

In case anybody cares, Here's my review of The Rainbow Children (I know I'm late)

I'm a long time follower of Prince, however, until recently, The Rainbow Children and N.E.W.S. were the only two of his officially released albums I hadn't heard. I honestly wasn't too excited about hearing TRC because I've heard so many bad reviews (even from friends who are big Prince fans).

Until recently, The Rainbow Children and N.E.W.S. were the only two officially relesed Prince albums I had not heard. I honestly wasn't looking foward to hearing TRC because of all the bad reviews I'd gotten from friends who were big Prince fans.

Well, it absolutely blew me away. It's inspired, experimental, and perfectly blurs the lines of jazz, rock, funk and soul. It even harks back to his early days at times, yet it manages to sound very fresh and progressive. I don't think there's a single song that I dislike. I don't even mind the voice that I was dreading (It sorta sounds the way I imagine Berry White sounded in the morning). It wasn't overused and actually helps with the continuity. As a whole, it reminds me of Marvin Gaye's Hear My Dear album (in that it tells the story of the break up of one marriage and the beginning of a new relationship along with spiritual rebirth) except Prince tends to be a little more melodramatic and less inclusive. I mean, the lyrics of TRC don't always have a universal appeal. That's not necessarily a complaint because it still works somehow.

All that being said, TRC is definately a stroke of genius and in my top 5 of Prince albums.

Snap

The Rainbow Children is a masterpiece of sorts. But it's too bad many of us can't see the forest for the trees.

That's funny. I hate songs performed acapella.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

sigh.....not another one of these threads.

The Rainbow children is one of the worst albums he has ever recorded.
It has nothing to do with it being a instrumental, which i love.
It just has this whole uninspired, dumb feel to the whole thing.

Not that i wanna be starting anything, but people push and spin thats genius, and i have to say that no, its garbage. Because it is.
both sides have to be heard.
with all due respect. lol

Maybe if he got the version with lyrics and vocals on, he'd like it a little mo better.

Glad you loved it though. I had much the same reaction, listened to it most days for a year and do still rate it up there.

Umm....if you aren't joking- you've been listening to the wrong album. Try the one with the lyrics.

And anyone who doesn't dig The Everlasting Now has no groove.

I did not start liking TRC until 2 years after I bought it. Don't know why but when I really listened to it I LOVED it! It's now one of my favorite discs. Enjoy!

I’m a real big fan of THE RAINBOW CHILDREN.
I’m not prepared or qualified to comment on its level of artistry. People that claim to be should be considered suspect until they can prove their qualifications.

I appreciate how different the album is from other Prince offerings.
I like the various messages found in the album, at least the ones I can discern.
And musically, its refreshing….even snappy.

The deep voice of the narrator wasn’t hard for me to get used too.

I wasn’t as appreciative of N.E.W.S., which resides at the bottom of my stack of Prince Cd’s. But who am I, and what do I know?

I'm just glad there are others out there that like this particular album (TRC). I was beginning to worry I might be the only one. smile

To say you don’t “wanna be starting anything”, and go on to criticize a persons judgment as “garbage” is absolutely ridicules.

As a person that likes TRC…maybe you could spend a little more time articulating the reasons WHY you don’t like the album, and less time picking fights.

“…all due respect. LOL”-----Yeah, that was believable.

You are not alone. That is the only album that I rarely spin. TRC is the only album that has truly disappointed me. Ill still take it over most of the shit out there on the airwaves.
(Insert something clever here)
