I'd say Tori Amos. She's idiosyncratic, has a unique sound, knows how to utilize her inspirations without being a clone of other artists, and she has a distinct sound (like her or not). Both have a interesting approach to melody, both balance (although Prince doesn't balance it anymore) but both balance sexuality with spirituality and use biblical imagery. Both were child musicians, both were inspired by Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Led Zep & Miles Davis. Both alienate there fans but maintain there loyalty. Both are always at odd's with there "sound". Type casted in a sense. She has brought forward alot of fresh views on being a strong female. Alot of her qualities are mostly percieved as male type (what ever that means). But she is sensual, and sexy...but commands respect for her mind, and gender. And she also causes women to feel empowered, and is critical of men, but never neglects who important a man is to a woman. Prince does the same just vice versa. Very yin and yang...Prince has the yang
I can't believe some of you guys cited people like Aaliyah, and Alicia Keys...don't get me wrong I liked Aaliyah (not so much Alicia-hype job 2 me) But come those girls do not have the artistic depth of PRINCE. India.Arie-i heard Prince has a career. India.Arie=can u say sophmore slump! Macy Gray...come on now. And Beyonce: she's a fucking revlon ad not a musician. With all those irratating scales she "sings" in her songs, and all & all dumb as a rock artistic approach. Look beyond the superficial. I'd disagree with the Madonna thing as well, because she isn't much of a musician...she's barely a songwriter. I think to ask Which artist is most like the female Prince (besides I can't really understand the question). Is a odd questions. And all & all-its tough to call because part of PRINCE being PRINCE is really how "male" he is. The johnny come lately people are fascinated on the surface by his supposed androgyny. But I think people who respect his art see that androgyny is not really what makes him interesting; he is songwriter who has a fresh point of view of the male experience (sexuality, love, romance). He has a very original view on things, ever changing and contradicting. I know I'm on a tangent, but I think I'm dead on it.

There isn't a woman out that releases the same ammount of music (an Lp almost every year) like prince does. The closest I would say is Meshell. Madonna only back in the 80's (maybe). Erykah has a smiliar soul but only comes out every 4 years. Alicia...hmmmm not a chance. She did a song with Usher for crying out loud. she walks the line between pop r&b and soul too closely. Now that im thinking about it, Janet Jackson is probably the best candidate. I mean her work with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis has got to add up to something. And her music is not quite, but has sort of a Prince sound.

I see your point. Baby girl totally had that Prince mystique about her. Like even when she gave interviews you didn't know who she really was. You could see her confidence in her self and her sexual self in her videos and photgraphs. Musically I would have to go with either Michelle or Alicia. Those two have his musical daring at times. Peace THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

Aaliyah did resemble some of his style, you could tell she like Prince, but no female Prince at all, I liked her, always will, but not.

Tweet. Definately Tweet. She knows how to play different instruments; she has a raspy-type of singing voice like Prince sometimes does. She's very sexual. Her songs on her album have wide range of creativity. Don't forget, she had a hit song about masturbation. After her, I would also say Missy and Kelis. There are so many facets that make up Prince it’s hard to find a female that would mirror him completely. But I think these female artists have aspects that reflect Prince as some have already mentioned….
Tori Amos Ani DiFranco MeShell N’degeocello Sheila E. and I’ll throw in Patrice Rushen for longevity and range Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I think your all looking in the wrong place. Try listening to Beverley Knight. Her first album has far more attitude than the list of ladies above.
Not Prince, but certainly as close as i've seen. Alicia a close second. But let's be honest she does try to sound like P.... Prince kicks all their axxes so hard, change fell out their pockets!
