Rebirth of the flesh

WOW

I've just got the studio version of the track. Can't believe I never looked for it until now.

Its awesome. Why did he not put this on SOTT or the Black Album, i'll never know.

Does anyone else prefer the studio version?

I didn't even remember there was another version than just the studio version until you reminded me of it...

Other than that, the reason why it isn't featured on SOTT is because Prince didn't feel like it was among the best songs he had recorded for the project (quite obviously) and as far as Black Album goes - it really was a spin-off project that was intentended to reflect the creative vibe of a one single recording session. Of course that never stopped him from putting "Rockhard In A Funky Place" on it...

That's my theory. I know it sucks, but you're welcome.

The Black Album is more of a mish-mash collection of tracks recorded for other things - Sheila E's birthday party, Rock Hard from Camille/Crystal Ball and the new track When 2 R In Love.

As for why Rebirth wasn't put (kept) on Crystal Ball when it became SOTT, I imagine you're right, Prince may have thought it wasn't strong enough of a track to be kept in the cut (oh, the tracklist for CB is in the sticky thread at the top before anyone asks wink )

It was an opening track to a themed LP, and probably served as that, as Prince often does (Dream Factory, Christopher Tracy's Parade for example?)

Seeing as it's the only track from Camille never to see an official release, I would say that was so.

I do think it's a great track, but I do also think it is the weakest of the Camille LP tracks, and I can understand why it remains in the Vault.

Had it been officially released, I imagine it wouldn't be quite so heralded by fans.

And lastly, it reminds me of Days Of Wild in as much that only live version(s) have been officially released smile

This is the one of the greatest remaining dark underground brilliant unreleased tracks that I know of... one of my favorites, and the live rehearsal knocks it out of the park, the essence of wild hard funk.

I have a feeling that Prince held it back because its too weird and uncommercial but certainly not weak form an artistic or creative view!

I think Prince is too easily influenced by the tastes of people immediately around him...

It came on only two days ago on my MP3 jukebox. Everytime I hear it I just get that face Prince is talking about on Larry Graham's GCS2000 album...

And I always wanna make the wild sign. Dunno why.

The rehearsal version is indeed intense. Just listen to that beautifully controlled feedback just before prince hits that guitar solo. Majestic. And to think that they are just rehearsing!
You do as I say
