I used to always think it was BUS but Snow Queen has convinced me it's BOSS.

Uh... no, I think you're deaf. Bus wouldn't make any sense in that verse.

How would a person have the option of taking a train or a bus in the same place? It's either a train station or a bus station, not both combined.

The only reason to blame something, for being late to work, is to your boss.

It's ok, hearing gets worse as you get older.

5 other websites say otherwise... so I guess everybody in the world, except you, is deaf.

It's BOSS, and that's official (what any websites might say is irrelevant).
The lyrics are printed in the original album release, so if Prince and Susannah
Hoffs say it's "Boss", then it's "Boss"... end of argument.

Yes it does make sense.

Being late is one thing, but being late and having the boss seeing you walk in late is another. Whatever excuse you come up with is taken down a peg or two. You can "blame it on the train", but it doesn't matter. The boss saw you walking in late so you are screwed.
I'm firmly planted in denial

Here's the official lyrics...

Have to catch an early train
Have to be to work by nine
And if I had an air-o-plane
I still couldn't make it on time
'Cause it takes me so long
Just to figure out what I'm gonna wear
Blame it on the train
But the Boss is already there

makes perfect sense to me.

Sure it does. The Boss is always late so she is at the train when you are gettin on (late).

Jokes aside, I sang "Manic Monday" for a sight-singing class and the lyric was actually Boss, and I had properly published sheet music, plus I've heard the song about a kajillion times.

You gotta wake up earlier in the morning to get one over on me, youngling.

Check your links, only 2 out of the 5 work. It's blatently obvious that Susannah Hoffs says "Boss" on the Bangles version, and Apollonia says "Boss" on her version.

That song is older than you, so don't try to tell someone who has been listening to Prince longer than you've been alive, what time it is.

Snap

I always thought it was "boss" -- never "bus" -- pretty cool little lyric that says a lot in so little words -- if it wasn't for the boss taking the same mode of transportation, she might be able to get away with blaming her lateness on the train. Just like wanting to blame lateness on the traffic, except when your boss takes the same exact route to work (like mine does).

But what's it got to do with Bruce Springsteen???

You know, I've got the album upstairs - and yet this was all much more fun than going upstairs and looking!!

biggrin
