Italian newspaper Repubblica about CG video On page 49 of today's (Oct 14th 04) issue there's a small article written by Ernesto Assante.
An airport, a girl with a passport in her hands and a finger on the trigger of a bomb. The girl triggers the bomb, the hall of the airport explodes. Just one instant and the images roll backwards. The girl is still there, she has only imagined the explosion, she looks around, she sees mothers and children, innocent people, she cries and she gives up her plan. This is the end of the video for "Cinnamon Girl", the new single by Prince, a clip supposed to start airing on MTV next week and that will start quite some polemics in the United States. The song is in the last album by the artist from Minneapolis and it has been airing on Italian radios for some weeks now. In the song Prince draws up against racism and against war by telling the story of an Arab-American girl in the United States after 9/11. The star of the video that was directed by Phil Harder is Keisha Castle-Hughes who plays the part of a girl that after 9/11 lives like many other Arab-Americans in an atmosphere of prejudice and racism, she is attacked by her class mates, she sees the signs in English take the place of the ones in Arab of the Arabian shops in her neighborurhood, she reads writings on the walls that accuse Arabians of being terrorists and at the end she is scolded by her parents who are traditionalists. The girl who is confused chooses the way of terrorism, she tapes a video of herself wearing traditional clothes, she prepares the bomb and then goes to the airport, where at the end she won't get to the extreme consequence. "The video tells where the imagination of a girl who's been put under pressure can get" underlines the director Phil Harder "Nothing is meant to be literal, we were interested in giving a strong image of one reality. Will it be censored? Young people see death and war on tv everyday, they know what is going on in the world and they are a lot more intelligent of what one would usually think. What we wanted is a video that would have people discussing an important subject.". The video was shot merging video images and drawings and using a refined tecnique that makes it very interesting, "Cinnamon Girl" was followed by Prince during all of the phases of the work and it is a high budget product, one of the best videos around at the moment. At the moment you cann see it over the Internet at launch.yahoo.com I did translate this very very fast so excuse me for all the possible mistakes. *********************************
