If Prince had a quintessential hip-hop/rap moment... ...what would it be? I'm gonna leave this pretty open, because I consider Sheila's flow on "Beautiful Night" to be up there. I also consider P's rap on "Girls and Boys" cool. But you have to consider these were also 87/86 respectively, so they sound like that era (of hip-hop). I don't think Prince deviated too far from that in his later efforts. Whata ya'll think?

Prince had rap nailed with Pussy Control. It was (is) a huge dance club anthem and despite what some around here will claim-is actually a legit rap song by Prince. "New Power slide...."

"Pussy Control" perhaps. It's somewhere between Rap and his early electro-stuff.

please gimme some hints... The whole "1999" -era. But I was merely referring to the fact that "Pussy Control" has the same sort of "crispy" synthesizer lines on it (updated though), nothing more.

I don't understand people saying Prince can't rap or has no flow.
Silicon is freak'n awesome...."cause this is the kind of stuff that requires patience". That one alone should be enough to show that he can lay it down. But I also like... Now P Control Get Off Johnny...great tune Dead on It...shooobedowap dowap Dead On! and man others... Jughead - ok, somebaody slap me - Tony M sucked Really tough, P is pretty damn good on the Mic.

For me his most successful hip hop stuff is on the maxi single of 'The Good Life' particularly the 'Big City' remix if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Hard for me to cipher this one, because a)Until recently I thought rap was pure garbage.b)Prince has been quoted as saying the same.
I can't really tell good rap from bad rap, I know what I like though and I've finally recognized that the form is special. However, my best friend who is a hip-hop expertise always says Prince embarrasses himself by trying rap at all. I would prefer he just leave it alone, especially since he doesn't really believe in it.

I actually asked my friend about Pussy Control and said, "How can you say Prince can't rap?" And he always replies that he should leave it alone. I played him Joint to Joint, even though I don't think it's really Hip Hop I think it's a great production, my buddy heard hip hop aspirations and dissed it. If you check Prince's statements by people close to him, he has said things such as "Do you know how it feels to watch these guys have a hit when they can't even play an instrument?" And Dead on It is a dismissal of rap I think. I think his recent angle of real music by real musicians is a sign that maybe he's finally given up on rap altogether. I can't say if he's any good at hip hop, I'm no authority at all. I see his rapping as a concession to the marketplace and pure business. I also think his digs at it are out of jealousy and as his engineer once said, a sign that he had lost his touch for the cutting edge.
