great...Prince's thought provoking video is lumped in with Eminem's exploitive video that has Michael Jackson almost diddling boys in it. Oh well, leave it to the media to muck things up.

to me i don't see all the fuss with eminem's video. i find it hilarious. its not like he's just making fun of m.j. he's making fun of himself too. all this will do is just boost up his album sales.
as far as Prince's video, i don't see all the controversy in it either, but if it will boost up his sales then so be it. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

There were two guys talking about the videos. Regarding Cinnamon Girl, they were very clear in explaining the video, and how it visually told the story based on the lyrics...how one girl imagined being a suicide bomber because of how she had been a victim of hate.
As for Michael Jackson, he's such a cry baby...geez, quit whining, and act like an adult for once.

Sad but true. I don't know why the media is dissin the video so much, I thought it was great. It told a story of what is really happening in the world today. It seems that every time Prince comes out with a video that is true to life or a little bit different, folks have to find fault with it. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Jokes about mj's nose are just boring now, princes video is cool tho [Edited 10/13/04 10:59am] [Edited 10/13/04 11:08am]

It seems that every time Prince comes out with a video that is true to life or a little bit different, folks have to find fault with it. With this new rhetoric of "With us or.. aganst us" that this administration would have us buy into..the corperate media wants to paint the enemy (anyone that don't want american imperialism) of "Democracy by bombs"..as animals that should be locked up and have there testicals shocked..and made to stand on chairs while dogs snap at them. To solve problems you have to go to the source of them, and not just become reactionary. Which is why this Video is important..it explains why someone would make that kind of choice..which is also reactionary...but sometimes the only way to be heard. We need alternatives..which is what I believe Prince is trying to convey...but big money don't like alternatives...just follow sheep..and be happy..you have MTV!

I can't remember the last time Prince did anything to get the ESTABLISHMENT this riled up. Good on him.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yeah i had a conversation with my friend about this video today, and he got riled up because he felt it was tactless and abit sick to present a teenager as a suicide bomber and he was anggry cos he felt why would an american muslim blow themselves up??
i tried explain stuff to him about the video and so on but to be honest they were questions that dont seem to have been raised amongst the media coverage of it so i did wonder what you lot at the org thought about it?

The thing is people and the media are getting all riled up , when in fact I bet very few of them have listened to the song/seen the video in its entirity . People are hearing the reports that a teenage Muslum/American girl blew herself up in an American airport in Prince's latest video and thats all they are basing their opinion on.
Crap..the thing hasn't been offically released yet. Great to see Prince ruffling feathers yet again. This may be his boldest most effective yet. Its one thing to change your name, play with the industry, mess with the charts with free CD giveaways...this is real shheeet.

Like I said before, glad to see Prince getting mucho attention for a timely and important subject. The fact that the video inspires discussion and debate is only a plus. Like Prince said, "It ain't over".
As for Eminem's video, MJ has done the best job of making himself one big, sad joke. Anything anyone else does doesn't even come close. And shame on BET for pulling the video. They don't have a problem with showing black women being degraded on a daily basis. But let someone make fun of an ugly, white woman, um, I mean MJ, and they yank that from their airwaves.

They also had this thing in EXTRA extra last nite so its gettin alot of attention

KTLA News spoke of the "Cinnamon Girl" video this morning (10.13.04) and the "controversy". They also went there and posed the question if Keisha castle-Hughes's acceptance to play the role was a wise choice. Geesh... Les enfants qui mentes ne vont pas paradis

Firstly good on you Prince for releaseing one of the best videos you have ever made.
I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Get over it!! The problem seems to be that everyone knows that what happens in the video is a possible scenario, and a reflection of the world today - they just don't want to acknowledge it. Listen to the lyrics people! Seems to me that they would prefer things all warm and runny with a big group hug at the end. The world isn't like that and Prince shouldn't be condemmed for it.

I personally think the Prince is a political statement and i love the video.
i hope he sells more albums with controversy in the media. On the other hand Eminem is a joke, he has no respect for anyone and personally i think he sucks. He has made derrogative coments about black girls, women in general and gays. Michael has every right to be upset . Well at least BET is doing something right for a change and they are not going to show Eminem's video. No matter what Michael has done with life and all the allogations, he should be respected as an artist and a human being. Michael needs to strike back hard at allthe media and other people taking below the waist jabs at him.

The thing I love about Eminem is that he just doesn't care. Anyone see when he accepted an MTV video award via video while eating a bag of chips? The man's a legend.

Thus began a mass illusion ,War on Terror alibi.
These will be the words that will set a nation on fire. A 2004 version of Malcolm X saying, " The chickens have come home to roost." Many Americans have bought the whole 911 thing hook, line, and sinker. This have given people a reason to hate. This thing has people scared. Then on Nov.2, 2004 the Fourth Reich will rise, as Herr Bush and company wins another false election. The whole thing scares the Hell out of me and I'm not talking about muslims . Stupid people are enough to scare you.

muleFunk, unfortunately I totally feel you.
As for the video and all the discussion it has sparked in the media, I say RIGHT FUCKIN' ON!!!! SassyBritches thought this should've been released as a single over the summer, and when he told me that I thought it would be a poor choice for a single...but then, after listening to his explanation and enthusiasm for the message of the song, I came around to his side. And the video is far, far better than any Prince fan has any right to expect, based on his track record. Kickass.... No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

And this timing is better than over the summer, pureply from a political standpoint. Americans tend to have very short term memory. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

Side note: On Comedy Central's "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn", the topic of Prince's Cinnamon Girl video controversy was also brought up. The consensus was that there really shouldn't be any controversy... and the usual name-change jokes were tossed about. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I love the video and hadn't really questioned whether using a teenager as a suicide bomber was responsible or not. Good question. Even better, yes, why would an American Muslim blow themselves up just because of harassment. Are you sure, though, that the video depicts an American Muslim rather than an immigrant. I'm pretty sure a citizen would not hold the same disdain for American culture that some in the Middle East do. Anyway, you've given me more to think about concerning the choices in this video

I'm not even sure that many of the critics of this video are even getting to the stage of listening to the subtleties or even obvious lyrics or watching the visual narrative - they are simply stopping at the "terrorism is no subject for pop music" position. This subject - like sex back in the day can only be addressed in the hushed and hallowed halls and "serious" media... well... no
It is clearly widely assumed that portrayal of a subject in a popular medium is "glorification" or dangerous over-simplification and irresponsible. Silence is more irresponsible. Call her green and the winter cannot fade her

All this Talk about Michael Jackson Being MAD Cracks me up ... Dont he have a right 2 B mad about a video depicting him doing lil boys right b4 a TRIAL that could put him away 4 the rest of his life ? Even more so if he is Innocent I'd B mad
As 4 Cinnamon Girl Video Prince knew this Video was gonna get crazy Press i think 2 many PPL R 2 sensitve about anything 9/11 related thats why other artists have steared clear of this very sensitive Subjuct Fear of Career suicide .... Props 2 Prince 4 doing what he wants with no Fear of a Public Lynching i think the Video is Great and Does not fall in2 the Videos Gone 2 Far Catagory if U actually watch the whole Video and not the 20 seconds they show on the NEWS

I'm pretty sure a citizen would not hold the same disdain for American culture that some in the Middle East do. yeah cheers for the comments, the way i saw it afterwards (when i stopped being flustered and had time to think about it!) was that if a couple of teenagers can walk into a school and shoot the place up, then there is no reason why another teenager couldn't become a suicide bomber really. its almost patronising to think that just cos its a teenager it is ridiculous to think she could consider it. yeah i think it has been commented that the close up of the passport is to show that its an american passport, showing how people are abusing an american citizen etc. so im fairly sure she is an american muslim. its weird cos its an angle noone has looked at really yet my friend came up with it straight away! he was quite cynical really, immediately saying "well it'll shift more units i suppose". ugh! sometimes its hard being a prince fan!

They don't have a problem with showing black women being degraded on a daily basis. But let someone make fun of an ugly, white woman, um, I mean MJ, and they yank that from their airwaves. I thought BET did the right thing. The video was in poor taste! The man , what ever you think of him is fighting for his LIFE! in a highly prejidicial environment that already has hung him in the court of "popular opinion". we in America still feel that if a person looks different that, that indicates Guilt. The Eminem video is a puzzle to me, haven't we seen this before? I thought Neil Young did something similiar in the early 90's and who is he to be "goofing" on anyone. This "WANNABE" has stated in song that he wanted to RAPE his own MOTHER and kill his WIFE. Your right about the content on BET, but that is a separate issue, this video( as far as the accusation is concerned) was directed towards ONE person and one person ONLY who happens to be on trial. it was improper , and even if you were to remove the MJ image and left the content of that piece in leaving the insinuation in it would still be grounds for removal in my opinion! besides the actal song itself suck!damn did he run out of ideas?
