I wish he woulda did that performance on a bigger scale(i.e. The grammys) I still beleive that most of the nation regard Prince as a singer and not a musician BUT my question is...who originally did that song and on what album is it on? I love the song itself..I like Tom Petty so I'm feeling that song and to have Prince CLOWNING on that song ..I like it even more!!!! I wonder if Tom and the fellas felt showed up by Prince?

The Beatles (George Harrison on lead) did the song on The White Album, Clapton did the original solo...i think.
Be careful...i hear the download avalable from Harrisons website is a skewed version of the original that was aired on VH-1 back in March 2004. For some reason, Harrison's people did a little editing to the killer solo that prince did. Rumor has it they thought prince did a littel too much showboating. I personally think prince should of said to the audience after he throw his guitar up: "TAKE THAT U SORRY MF'S" Positivity YES

Prince did show boat a bit too much on that performance. Which is a shame because he played so great on that song. He could have won over alot of new fans. But, all the people I know that saw it were appalled at how cocky he added and a couple that were planning on going to a see his concert coming up cancelled their plans because of this. If I didn't respect George Harrison so much, I could probably excuse it, but George really was a peaceful, loving, religious and humble person. I think Prince could have been a bit more humble as well. If he didn't want to show his respects to George, then why was he there? To sell records?

Why was he there ? Cos he was inducted into the Rock n roll hall of fame the same night seems a pretty good reason to be there in my estimation. And yeah , Prince doesnt do humble , Prince does Prince , flamboyance mixed with brilliant musical talent , he doesnt have to change for anyone , dead or alive . I absolutely LOVED Princed guitar solo and can rewind my videotape over and over again to listen to it.
But , yes, the posturing was a bit much. I can understand being overwhelmed by the music. But his theatrics went beyond that. That was a tribute to Harrison and should have been respectful. It was not a tribute to Prince ... but he acted as if it were...

Who are these people!!!!!???? #1 it was truly Prince's night. #2 George's own son seemed in awe and greatful for Prince's participation in the song. I remember him saying to someone "where's Prince? I want to thank him or hug him" or soething like that...

1) Prince did win over a lot of fans with that performance...no "could have" about it. 2) If "all" the people you know were "appalled" by Prince's performance enough to no longer go to his "Musicology" tour, then that says a helluva lot more about them than it EVER could say about Prince and his solo. 3) Prince could have played along and did a "humble" solo (wtf??...), but if he had toned it down, I bet his solo wouldn't have been half as devastating as it was...90% of what you see Prince do is the result of him getting lost within his playing, just letting the musical spirit drive him...Yes, there were one or two bits that were probably rehearsed, but the rest was just pure Prince being Prince...why ask him to be anyone else? 4) Prince "didn't want to show his respect to George", huh??...How is his performance in any way, shape or form disrespectful??...It would be far more disrespectful to hold back on that beautiful song less a few over-sensitive Harrison fans get their panties in a bunch. 5) "Why was he there??"????!!!!!...omfg...He was there because he put out 25 years of extraordinary music and was being honored with an induction into the HOF, THAT'S why. And at the end of EVERY HOF ceremony, it's tradition for all the honorees to jam together on one last song...Since George Harrison had passed away, they picked one of his songs to jam to, as an honor to him as well as a way of having Harrison "jam" with the rest of the honorees...but the performance was NOT simply a George Harrison tribute, it was ALSO a celebration honoring the lastest inductees and giving the audience a once-in-a-lifetime experience of seeing these specific musicians all playing live together. So it was about more than just George Harrison.. And by the way, aren't you contradicting yourself by first saying "Prince could have gained some new fans had he toned it down"...only to THEN say, "Why was Prince there, to sell records??"...So, which is it...would playing in a more subdued fashion have garnered him more fans, thus more sales...or was playing in the fashion that he did done solely to garner more sales, which means more fans?? 6) Even if it WAS just about George Harrison, did you see the way people reacted at the event itself to Prince's solo??...Watch it again if you have to...the entire audience was sitting calmly and "respectfully" right up until Prince takes center stage and just wails on his guitar...by the time he does the "fall backwards off the stage while still playing" shtick, everyone in attendance is on their feet, and they are giving Prince a standing ovation for what he just did...and they never sat down again. 7) But even more telling, watch Dhani Harrison's face as Prince's entrance is about to happen..watch how he smiles gleefully and nods in Prince's direction, as if he knows Prince is about to tear shit up and he can't wait...Watch Dhani's expression as Prince falls backwards off the stage while still playing guitar...his smile is so genuine and happy it's literally touching to see George's son (and almost dead-ringer look-alike) smiling in appreciation, then looking around at everyone else on stage as if to say "Did you see that!!..That is so cool!"...Then just watch Dhani throughout the rest of the performance, constantly looking over at Prince with a smile on his face, then over to the rest of the band, then back at Prince, eager and excited about what he might do next. I will take Dhani Harrison's smile of approval over some toeheads who turned their noses up at Prince's "showboating" anyday of the week. [Edited 10/11/04 23:35pm] [Edited 10/12/04 9:53am]

Is the thing that struck me immediately. And the best point raised in defence of Prince's so-called disrespect. Even before I heard this CONSTANT bickering over the 'dis-respect', I watched Dhani reaction, which made me smile. Nothing wrong with Prince's attitude that night; the guitarsolo did honor Mr Harrison remembrance. In a way no other person could have, except maybe Eric Clapton.

Byron what a great analysis you gave of P’s performance at the RHOF.
Of all the people that performed that night it was Dani Harrison who was looking 4 Prince. Dani Harrison said “where is Prince?” I want 2 give him a hug” those were his exact words. At that moment he wasn’t interested in anyone but Prince. IMHO Prince was making a statement. Prince knew he was being watched and graded by all the top heavyweight artists/musicians in that audience. He also knew he was being watched by millions of fans as well as his former WB family amongst other naysayers. He let everyone know he was diffidently deserving of being inducted into the RHOF in his 1st year of eligibility. He let his God given talent and showmanship speak for itself. Remember media and reporters alike have said over and over again that some people wait a lifetime 2 be inducted and never get there. Here we have our Prince being inducted the 1st year of eligibility. It was also stated that he was a unanimous choice when he made eligibility for induction into the RHOF. Prince gave people just what they wanted, a show. It was also written that the RHOF is usually a laid back conservative type of crowd but with Prince opening and really closing the show in such pure Princely fashion that he had everyone on there feet or moving in there seats 2 his music and performance. Another example, when u see a Mike Tyson fight u can expect just about anything 2 happen. People r waiting to see some drama, because that’s what Mike brings 2 the ring. People come 2 see him because he brings excitement. It would be boring if Mike just went in the ring and had a regular fight. It’s the same with Prince. They know he is one of the greatest entertainers of all time and they are expecting a show of all shows. He has always done it his way. Writers as well as media have said his performance that night was noting but pure genius and that’s why he has been labeled one of the greatest performers of all time. U can call him what u want, arrogant, showoff what ever. U don’t have 2 like him but YOU DIFFIENDTLY HAVE 2 RESPECT HIS GOD GIVEN TALLENT. He is the greatest entertainer of our time. According 2 one of the writers in one of many magazines, said the guy that put the RHOF show together should have sent Prince Roses for that performance.

i can't believe that people actually believe that Prince was "show boating" too much and showing off on his performance...
c'mon what do u expect any other genius to do? He's suppose to "just" play his little guitar and "behave" like all the others? Umm no i don't think so... Prince is always gonna be known to "show off" because he's got it, he's great, and he knows it. So do all the trillions of fans around the world knows he has it and we want nothing more but for him to play his ass off anymore. I would have been really disappointed if he wouldn't have played the way he did. The man puts on a great shows, because he's a great musician and a great entertainer and i hope that when he is 80 years old he's still kickin ass on the guitar and outshowing someone else on stage with him. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Not important... Harrison's kid loved it and that's way more important than what some "outsiders" think about it... Some of those idiots call it "showboating" (obviously those are not musicians...) I call it playing guitar... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

I call it playing guitar... And so do I. I'd also like to add that P already had much respect for George Harrison. I believe that the ONA Live box set reveals that one of George's songs was part of the setlist. I also want to add that hindsight is 20/20 for the folks who think prince was "showing off". Had he not put any energy into it, these same compainers would be chastising him for that. "Man, it was cool and everything, but he should have laid into that guitar and really put on a show in honor of George" . They asked P to play, that's what they got. Make no mistake, I do believe that a part of that solo was Prince showing all of us that he's proud of his 25 years in the biz and that he can hang with the best of them, but the other part was definitely showing honor and tribute to George Harrison by getting up there and playing from the heart (to one of George's most beautiful tunes). It's possible to do both at once, and I think the usually stiff HOF was due for such a performance.
