Prince's vocal skills

I would like your top 5 songs were Prince is display top vocal skills.
I always knew he was a great musician, writer, and performer, but I had always put him in the "rock star" vocal skills, ya know, can't really carry a tune but you love him anyway.

Well lately I have been really listening to some new stuff and realize that although he is no luther vandross, he is better than many "crooners" out there.
So please list your top 5. I would like to check them out myself.

thanks

My favorites are the ones that feature his falsetto. Now, Philip Bailey can give Prince a run for his money in that department. I really love the screams. NOBODY can scream like Prince.

Snap

I'm an early Prince fan, and I wasn't really impressed with his voice until I heard him sing, "Purple Rain" -- that had to've been a stretch for his voice back then.

Anyway, off the top of my head, the songs that show his vocal range and skills (in order) are:

1. Damn U
2. Dark
3. Adore
4. Do Me, Baby
5. Man O' War
6. The One
7. Eye Hate U

I remember Tom Jones once saying that he loved Prince's musical abilities but didn't rate his voice.

Personally, I think that's the kettle calling the pot black.

Some of my favorites, in chronological order:

For You - for conceiving those vocal harmonies, having the range and ability to perform them all himself, and having the confidence and guts to even try it... Remember, this is the first track of his debut album, by a 19 year old kid!

How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore - perhaps his greatest falsetto moment, in my opinion. I read somewhere that for many years, he didn't want to perform this song live, since he didn't think he could (vocally) match the recorded version...

Still Would Stand All Time - an overlooked ballad and a very powerful and emotional performance. He sings in his normal voice and doesn't use falsetto at all.

Daddy Pop - displays an incredible range in just the first four bars (he sings an E in four different octaves!)

Hide The Bone - a dirty, high-register, chest-voice performance with lots of power and energy.

- Dark (from very low to very high - my fav)
- Nothing compares 2 U
- Adore (it's simply extreme!)
- Pink Cashmere ("'til U come on back, come on back 2 ya little man..." sounds awesome!)
- Kiss (the ending shows his range perfectly)

is that Prince singing that low ass note at the beginning of Daddy Pop? i always thought it was someone else. i think he sounds a LOT better live than on recordings. i have this live version of Beautiful Ones with him and Rosie and Prince blows. and Scandalous. the way he sings in that song makes you want to fcuk him.

SAVIOR!!! I have been jamming to Emancipation and it was THIS song that made me realize that he really has a nice voice, then I started paying attention to some of my other faves.

I am making a list... some of these like I love you but I don't trust you, I don't have the CD yet... but I am having tons of fun, finding old CDs and listening to them for the first time.

His voice in POWER FANTASTIC is so powerful. I love the way P rises and drops his voice to levels that make the small of your back tickle.

Also in ADORE of course, thats a given

but most of all i love the growls!!!! yeah like in THE BEAUTIFUL ONES!!!!! and the LADDER...
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
