Number23

That was suprisingly well put together. I saw Tony Wilson on Richard & Judy the other day (I know, I know, I know) and he talked of how Prince was an ultimate musical genius and if it wasn't for Joy Division being in the ten, the wee man would have immediately got his vote. Suprising, to me at least. Tony never seemed to me the kind of dude who would dig Prince. I think it's finally happened - the ridicule years are over and people have actually realised what we have in our midst - in the words of Terry Lewis - 'The Shit'.

It hasn't been announced yet. It's an all or nothing vote. He's either in or out.

Mel B really is a professional Prince-stalker, isn't she?

Could someone please clear this up for me as well. I recently checked a Guiness Music Records book and it said that TMBGITW was No.1 in the UK and i don't remember it getting there. So was it or wasn't it?

It was definately number 1... I remember it well thinking that an album to follow up the single would kick ass! But alas, TGE was a LONG time in coming after that and the momentum of TMBGIW had since vanished before the album was released.... A WB cock-up I think it was. They wouldnt let him release another single on his own after the success of TMBGITW (I think he wanted to release Lovesign), so he had to wait.

Don't blame WB, this was six of one, and half a dozen of the other.

The footage was really well put together. I am so torn, because The Smiths were so utterly ground breaking in the UK that it's hard to vote for Prince. There was one scene where he was being quizzed by a reporter outside, and they asked him what he thought of the place and he said "Purple" and then said "excuse me" and just ran off to the fence and threw his jacket into the crowd. It must have been from a long time ago. It was a good moment.

But I can't let Morrissey down. Prince is ever present. The Smiths lasted 5 years. I have to vote for them. Sigh.

I'd vote 4 Jacko if I had too!

How the fuck is Madonna in the uk hall of fame already? I understand y Elvis, the beatles, Bob Marley, and U2 r in their, but Madonna already has a place over Michael? That is bullshit!

Good to c that Warner exec taking the time to talk.....that alex bloke is creepy, I woulda liked to of heard what Noel Gallahger thinks of Jacko and Prince, his views r very funny at times.....

Maybe, but it was still the tussle between the two that blew the whole timing of TGE etc... It would have done a hell of a lot better on the back of the success of TMBGITW... Lovesign woulda made a great follow up single too...

Its amazing how many bad decisions have been made over the years. Decisions that were the difference between success and failure... Imagine if TGE was an even bigger success than D & P... What would have become of Emancipation? Would Emancipation even have been what it ended up as? Would C & D have even surfaced? Would we even have NPS?

Imagine what the 90's could have been if TGE was a HUGE success, slap bang in the middle of the decade... The potential was ripe for a huge hit. A number one single, the new name and the hype that surrounded it, other great singles to follow. Combine that with what a lot of people on the Org have summized as to what TGE was originally intended to be...

Never mind... It could have worked but didnt.

In 1994, US people at large wouldn't of bought it much anyway I imagine! People at large were still biting on Nirvana and the black market woulda only got "I hate u" (which they did!).....

...."TGE" infact woulda done better if "TMBGITW" wasn't on it.....track sounds outta place on the album (which 4 once definately had a focus of no random 1980's outtakes put in to fill up the album).....

"P control" coulda had great Potential.....anyway who the fuck could we predict these things anyway.....who knows?

I agree with you on all counts - the material for TGE was pretty much already there - Come, The Undertaker, The Dawn, The Gold Experience - that was a fantastic period, and IMO it was his 3rd burst of shit-hot creativity (the other 2 being 82/83 and 85/86).

It was from 1986 and was him arriving in Sheridan, Wyoming for the premiere of Under the Cherry Moon.

Back to the program though, how the hell did The Jam not get in the nominations ?!?!?! eek

That website now says Prince has had one number 1 in the Uk ,
have they changed it or did you misread it in the 1st place?
