The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

This song is without a doubt one of Prince's coolest ever. I'm wondering, is there an extended version?

It's really hard to get. Almost as hard to get as the Black Album, which has yet to be released. Have you heard of The Crystall Ball? All kinds of stuff in there too.

OK, you just heard about her? DP is the one who coined the phrase "Wear your heart upon your sleeve"..and hence the many images of him doing so. The song is also about that as well. I am not certain of more connections.

The song is definitely inspired by her.

Although Prince himself claimed not to have heard about Dorothy Parker prior to
recording the song. Susannah asked him after the recording session of it was
about Dorothy Parker and he claimed he didn't know anything about her.

But I think that that's just bs. He knew about her. For many reasons, including
the ones you have stated.

I always took that great big heart around his writs, on his sleeve, to be exactly
what you just said!

I'd much rather see a thread about someone discovering the greatness of The Ballad of Dorothy Parker than oh let's see... ummm...

  • Someone translating the lyrics to incorporate the meaning of "vaginas"
  • Someone bitching because he hasn't written a song as good as The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
  • Zel-- How Prince makes one come all over one's self
  • If you were sitting in the studio with Prince while he was recording The Ballad of Dorothy Parker what would you say to him?

Please people. I know a lot of us are too knowledgeable for our own good when it comes to Prince's catalogue however, there's no need to be asses to anyone who's just discovering or re-discovering these gems.

I have wondered if this song could be read as a night where almost everything goes on in his head:

He is having a bad night, thinking of all the things he could have done or said in old relationships,
At the resteraunt he talks with the cute clever waitress, and imagines a night with her.
Later the bubble bath calms his mind of worries.

Probably not exactly what he meant it to be, but like so much of his work it is open to many interpretations
Now I'm older than movies, Now I'm wiser than dreams, And I know who's there
When silhouettes fall
